Boston for the Dogs: what do users think?
Sarah Friend: I brought my reactive rescue dog to Boston For the Dogs and unfortunately did not have a good experience. During my (pricey) private lesson, her assigned trainer and I took a short walk around the block and I was given just one suggestion (to hold the leash differently) then sat on the couch while my trainer joked around with other trainers and obliquely talked about my dog; the only feedback I got was that she was anxious (which I already knew) and to "give her a good pop" with a prong collar if she barked at other dogs (which, I have since learned, is NOT indicated). No follow up, no treatment plan or goals, nothing additional. Still, being a new dog owner, I did not know about best practices and brought her to their day program for awhile but did not see any change until finding a new trainer, who, during our fist private lesson, followed up with my with a comprehensive treatment plan including actionable, positive reinforcement steps I could take to work on at home. I rarely write negative reviews, but for the sake and safety of others' dogs, felt compelled to write this, as I question Boston for the Dog's practices.
Ana polanco: From my personal experience: I sent my dog for half a year for school classes to let him socialize, and he always came with more energy. When I picked him up, he was on all the time on create.They never sent me updates or pictures about activities with him, even when I asked them what they do with him.I told a girl (I don't want to say her name) working there that my dog has a really bad reactive problem at home, and she said that he is perfectly fine and that maybe I was the problem, and was on my head.I paid for a private 1;1 trainer at home, and the same girl who came as a trainer, realize that he has a big reactive problem, barking at everything and being aggressive with everybody and basically only showed me to pull him on the leash all the time when he barks.And I was using her advice which didn't work and made my reactive dog get worse. I email her and did get an answer because I really needed help and I was starting to use medication for him but I had to stop it because I didn't have a trainer for him.Later I decided to pay for hiking classes and I had to pay around $200 just to see if my dog qualified for that, and after that, the hiking basically was to pick up my dog and give him a short 30 minutes or less walk with a prong collar. So disappointed, I thought will be real hiking in the woods.And was upset because they had good reviews. And I realize that they are different with some people, and I was feeling apart.I really need help with my dog and I trusted them. I have a low-income salary and I lose money and time that is not coming back and makes me really sad because I could invest that money in a better trainer for my dog that didn't deserve that. After reading all those comments, makes me sad. And it makes me feel like a bad dog mom.
k k: I and many others have had concerning experiences with BFTD, as explained below.Open Letter to Boston-area Dog Owners About Concerning Business Practices by Boston for the Dogs663 SUPPORTERS as of this reviewAs former employees and clients of Boston for the Dogs (BFTD), a dog training company that services Boston and surrounding communities, we feel compelled to share our collective experiences using BFTD's services and/or working for the company.In late 2022, several employees and clients left our positions with the company and/or ceased using their services due to a number of incidents we found concerning. Online posts about these experiences were seen by other former employees and clients who'd had similar experiences. After talking with each other, we couldn't ignore the clear pattern of incidents and behaviors and felt they are troubling enough to warrant being shared publicly.The concerns that follow were each expressed by multiple former BFTD employees and/or clients from 2018 through 2022. Any isolated incidents experienced by only one person have not been included. Furthermore, all incidents below were verified by written records, screenshots, or other documentation prior to inclusion.- Trainers, including BFTD's owners, had little to no formal education (through schooling or apprenticing with other qualified trainers) in training service dogs (SD). However, the company offered this service, and BFTD's principal owner told clients that their trainers were qualified to task-train dogs.- Several service dogs from their program could not perform any tasks for their handlers' medical needs after significant training time and financial investment, failing to meet their training expectations. Progress reported verbally and in writing was inconsistent with what dogs were actually able to do. Some lacked basic obedience skills, which presented safety concerns for handlers who could not reliably have their medical devices in public.- Reactive and/or aggressive dogs were handled inappropriately. Several bites to both humans and dogs occurred during active company services and required urgent care.- The conditions at the facilities for day-training clients and overnight boarding were unsanitary, including dogs present with highly contagious illnesses. Vaccination records were not up-to-date in the company's system.- BFTD ownership often did not report incidents such as bites and illnesses to clients.Many staff lacked adequate training for their positions and reported being put in situations where they felt unsafe or unqualified on multiple occasions.- Safety concerns that were brought to BFTD's owners were disregarded and/or went unaddressed.- Employees, including BFTD's owners, were frequently drinking during work hours, including during lessons and classes with clients.- BFTD's owners shared information and feelings with employees that pushed the boundaries of a professional relationship without permission.- Medical letters with personal information about service dog clients were stored unsecurely in a shared Google Drive folder.- Several former clients and employees filed reports with the Massachusetts Attorney General and Boston's Animal Control offices.Our motivation for writing this letter comes from a place of deep concern for the safety of dogs currently in the care of BFTD and for owners considering using BFTD's services in the future. During our time as employees and/or clients, attempts to raise these concerns were not taken seriously. Negative reviews posted online were often removed by the owners while other people didn't feel safe going public on their own. We hope anyone who's had similar experiences with this company, or knows friends, family, neighbors, or others who have, will join our effort to alert the greater Boston dog community about the pattern of behavior and treatment at Boston for the Dogs. Our collective experiences go back as far as 2018. And no matter where you are in your life at this time, we welcome your support as a signer.
Madi M: I am a former client and employee. It has taken me years to feel comfortable sharing my experience with this company but in light of the other stories being shared I feel wrong staying silent. As an employee, I was overworked and underpaid, and still spoken about in an incredibly poor fashion. Employees are paid 35-40% of the cost of the services with NO base pay, are expected to use their own cars and pay for gas with no reimbursement, and use their personal cell phone for work. On top of this, they’re expected to handle 5-6 dog packs with minimal training (1-2 weeks of shadowing another handler at most). Dogs with high levels of reactivity are given to handlers, and expressing discomfort or lack of experience when assigned dogs will lead to your schedule being cut down resulting in little to no income. I developed anxiety so bad as a result of multiple bites and having to break up fights between dogs that I was not equipped to handle, that I developed severe panic attacks and migraines. The one time I tried to call out I was told I needed to give more notice in the future as it was a major inconvenience, but ironically enough the owner stays home sick with no notice whenever she pleases.Both clients and employees are favorited or talked down on in a manner you’d expect from a sorority or high school clique rather than a professional environment. Clients are expected to buy copious amounts of expensive gear for training and activities, sign up for classes that are incredibly expensive, and do so happily. People who can’t or won’t are treated as though they don’t care about their dogs and are the subject of major ridicule behind closed doors.I could go on about the awful experiences I had but I will end by saying please, if you value your relationship with your dog and want to be treated with compassion and respect, choose another facility.

My dog Josie and I used their services for under a year to find out their training facility was extremely unorganized — it was impossible to get any updates on what my dog was doing in school (I have emails and messages to prove this), the owners + staff consumed alcohol on the job (we witnessed this at a chiropractic visit at the owners house where Hannalore was slurring her speech), the facility continuously had giardia and kennel cough outbreaks, we had an unpleasant 1:1 lesson with Corey where he told me to correct my dog for avoidance behaviors on an ecollar. Don’t be fooled by the many positive reviews as the owner gives out free group classes for writing one. Do your research when looking for a reputable dog training facility. I really regret coming here. Stay far far away from BFTD.
Adam Zeidman: If you’re a DINKWAD (double income, no kids, and a dog) millennial, crazy dog parent like I am, this is the only review you need to read.As an overly protective (psychotic) dog parent, I really did a lot of homework before enrolling our (at the time) 5 month old Bernedoodle Cooper in day school. I read a lot of positive reviews and few that were concerning to me. I requested a call with one of the owners to give them a chance to speak to the negative reviews before I made a decision. Hannalore answered all of my questions (primarily regarding “disliking doodles” and use of tools) and I felt very comfortable with her responses. Following that conversation we enrolled Cooper in day school and immediately saw improvement in his attention span, ability to understand commands, and leash manners. The staff was always super friendly, sent report cards with photos and videos, and always offered me advice and info on what he worked on. I was (and still am) over the moon with how much my little guy enjoys his time there.To be fully transparent, like any good relationship, we did hit a snag. A tool was used on Cooper that I did not consent to and like the Papa Bear I am, I was furious. I requested to speak with the owner who used the tool (Corey), and I expressed my displeasure. Now, I’m not an experienced dog trainer, so I don’t think I know more than these amazing professionals, I do however believe in consent. When I spoke with Corey, I told him that a tool should never be used on a dog without consent from the owner and if Cooper was to come back, I would need to see a change in their policy to ensure that consent would ALWAYS be given before a tool was used. Corey completely understood and (as a small business) was open to suggestions for improvement - no excuses, no backpedaling, and full accountability. With that response, and the implementation of consent for tools, I was completely satisfied sending Cooper back to day school.It’s now been over a month since that snag and I can confidently say I am beyond thrilled with how this was handled and the care and training my Coop is receiving at BFTD. Mistakes happen, but the fact that this amazing place was honest and open to a change in their policies is something that really sets BFTD apart from other places.I can 100% say if you’re crazy like me, stop your search - you’ve found the place for your pup. All of the staff are amazing, but I would like to give a special shout-out to Becka and Thaloa who go above and beyond the call of duty and send me videos and VERY detailed report cards so I can continue the work at home. I can officially say my 7 month old pup is better behaved, knows more commands, and has better social skills than most dogs twice his age. I’m writing this review because finding a place to trust with your fur baby is scary, and you never know what you’re going to get. But BFTD has done an amazing job with Cooper and I hope my experiences make you feel comfortable with them being a part of your fur baby’s life too!

They even came to our house for a lesson to work on better behavior with a neighbor's dog. The trainers are amazing - experienced, clear, well-organized, supportive, non-judgmental and fun. The five star review is seconded by my pup who does happy bunny hops every time she comes to day school or sees one of the trainers for a lesson :) Even group classes have opportunities for individual instruction catered to the human and the dog, too, as every trainer I’ve seen for groups will check in and help adjust the handler or take a moment with the dog.

Andrea Smith: Would never recommend using this company. I was getting an 8 week old puppy and wanted to start socialization. They required a 2 hour one on one booking costing over $200 and couldn’t even confirm that I would be able to utilize the services after. He can’t even stay awake that long. I was still willing to give it a shot because they seemed reputable, but the puppy was having diarrhea, so I needed to cancel. I was not able to cancel online and was not able to speak to someone over the phone. They still charged the full fee even though my puppy was sick. I do not recommend and will never use their services.Previously, they had no issue immediately responding to text messages, but did not respond when I needed to cancel due to a sick puppy. If they had responded to my message, I would have explained more sooner but their immediate response was that I was being charged for the full session even though in the handbook, it says you will not be charged for a sick animal.
Alanna Wong: Reasons why we love BFTD:— structured day school: love that it’s not a free- for -all play day. It gives Atlas a balance of mental and physical stimulation. School creates an environment for Atlas to learn new skills and continue to work on basic obedience to prepare her for success in the community. She also gets to release her inner beast by spending time on the slatmill. She always come home happy and tired. Best part of it all, the report card I receive summarizing what she worked on and how to continue practicing with her at home.- group classes: such a wide variety of classes available to choose from! I can choose the classes that will best help us achieve our goals together. Our personal favorite so far is “practice in the park”- training in the real world with real world distractions.- Since joining the BFTD family, the bond I have with Atlas has definitely grown. We have so much fun training AND playing together. BFTD trainers provide the tools to help us succeed.Excited to continue this journey of learning and growing together with Atlas! Thank you BFTD!

Whatever your goals are BFTD is a safe space for you and your dog to work hard and achieve those goals. They offer a variety of trainings and aim to accommodate people’s schedules. Brittney Cahill: I was just walking my dogs around Ashmont and was handed their business card and was reminded of my awful experience and felt compelled to post this review. I reached out to Hannalore in 2019. She rescheduled our first appointment due to a family emergency. Because I’m human, I understood, of course. Thought she was great with my dog and I learned so much from her in the initial consult and was excited to move further. Then my dad died, tragically. I reached out to her a while after to express that regrettably I wasn’t able to keep up with the training, as life got in the way, and was looking for board and train ideas. (As life got in HER way and she was unable to keep our first appointment…..) Her response was ice cold. Apparently I wasn’t “committed” enough because I did not want to schedule daily sessions/hikes with her random new hire (Elon or Ethan or something?) I was then kicked out of the FB group like Friday’s trash. Thank god I found the Urban Hound and met hands down the greatest trainer, Nick Miller. The team is also great at training the humans to advocate for their dog, which in my case, was more than necessary.. Constance: Awful experienceThey quite literally tested our bunny to death.The receptionist a black woman with braces ( no name tag) was horrible to us It only got worse. 3k dollars & 4 Days in the hospital and a WRONG diagnosis he was sent home. He was obviously still very sick we took him back within 48 They wanted a $4,000 deposit to start another round of testing. After the first test they wanted to euthanize him. We took him home. Our rabbit suffered needlessly through unnecessary & expensive tests at the hands of their greed & incompetence. Don't wait for an emergency and end up in a dump like this get a good exotics pet vet. Before you have an emergency and end up at the mercy of these people
Pamela Kaldi: My Peep goes into Angell at Nashoba every three months for blood work. The staff there treat him like a king. Believe me when I tell you he loves going there. Doctor O'Toole is always so kind and explains everything to me, in words I understand. I email Angell at Nashoba when my Peep has a flare up and needs to have his prednisone adjusted and they always answer promptly. Peep also has several prescriptions, when I call for refills they always process them that day.Thank you Angell at Nashoba for making Peep & me, feel like we are family; and not just some dog and another owner.I would / do recommend them to every one I know. Everyone I spoke to about their experiences with getting a cat fixed they didnt even bother with a cone. K Davis: Check your receipt before you leave! Many items are not priced and if you ask for a price check they will include it in your charge even after confirming they will take it off. They try to rush you out of the store after your purchase, but take your time to review your receipt. After not getting a call that my puppy evaluation was cancelled to super rude customer service from the manager when I went the second time to get the evaluation, I've decided this is NOT the place for me. I would not recommend this store. I am not someone who typically writes reviews but since this is dealing with our fur babies I thought it was necessary!

Emily Coleman: the doggy day care is way too overcrowded, the dogs are often kept in crates, and that's to say nothing of the smell in the room. It's also a TINY room for doggy day care. It seems to me the people that staff the doggy day care are not well trained in dealing with dogs, as there have been incidents where dogs were bitten. I definitely do not recommend loyal companion for doggy daycare unless you want your dog in a tiny, smelly room where they spend a lot of time in a crate!
Robert Veneziano: Trying to set up dog care here has been a nightmare. I tried last year, with staffing changes the communication was awful - last minute cancellations, rebooking for 2-3 weeks out, phone calls not returned, etc. I tried again, sending them paperwork in on 6/10, asking to confirm receipt. No reply. I called about three weeks later to check in if they received my email (is a simple reply in email too much to ask?), I was told I would get a call back, nothing. I called again on 7/12 to check in. Amari was robotic, and not friendly at all. I asked her if my docs were received, and her reply was they could see me this week for a temperment test. Great, but that's not what I asked. I said I was not ready for that yet, as my schedule this week did not allow, but asked a second and then third time, were my docs received via email and she finally confirmed. Told her I would call back to schedule a temperment test another time when my schedule allowed and she practically hung up on me. There are so many other options in town for daycare with better customer service. Not sure why I kept trying these folks again....and again. I should have given up after the first attempt and took it as s sign! Go elsewhere for a place that only specializes in daycare - my guess is it's way better run and a much larger space for dogs to run around.

Katherine Mize: REALLY slow grooms--they kept my (well behaved) dog for over 5 hours last time we took him without the opportunity for a restroom break. Unimpressed with the quality of the groom and unimpressed with the service. I also placed an order online and it turned out that 2/3 of what I ordered was actually out of stock.

Liani Wang: The staff are the best people and animal lovers, ever. My puppy's tail got slammed by the door and started to bleed. The staff immediately came over with cleaning solution and helped stop the bleeding. They were so reassuring to me and my pup. They recommended I call my vet and patiently let me wait in the store while I figured out where to take him. They even recommended a nearby animal hospital to take him. They provided me with all the information and everything I needed to get him the vet care he needed. They are SO kind and compassionate. I am so grateful!

Angela Allard: They are awesome at the Boston Animal rescue League. They have the most wonderful and caring people you will ever have the privilege to meet. They are absolutely wonderful. They helped us find our girl. When we went out (from Worcester) there to see the dog they felt he wasn't a good match for us, and they were right. When we got back home, I sad so disappointed. We told them again what we were looking for, and they said they would keep their eyes open for us and said they would do their best to find us what we needed to complete our. When we get home that night they sent us a picture of our baby. Right away we knew she belonged home. We went back out the next day, spent some time with her, took her home that day and she hasn't been back since. Our forever girl found us. We've had our little girl for two years now. Jacob Dong: In the afternoon, I was bored with my girlfriend and wanted to go to shelter for a walk. I came across a new litter of puppies. One of them was a black one, which we saw at first sight, and the staff kept telling us to make sure there was no one in line ahead of us to see the litter. After an hour of waiting, we finally got in line, and the staff knew we were next and adopted the dog with an another family. We double-checked that the puppy was not reserved, first come, first served, and that family came after us. Later communication with the staff was useless, only admitting their mistakes but not solving any practical problems. The most outrageous is telling us that we can't punish another family for their shelter's mistakes, implying that we have to accept their mistakes? Just don't go to this shelter to get angry 🙏

Kelly Miller: We recently had our cat neutered through the Franklin Park Spay Wagin'. It was a great experience! The staff was wonderful and the incision healed beautifully. Highly recommend if you are in need of low cost vet care.
Julor Hart: I called them about a lost guinea pig and talked to someone there. I was told that I would receive a call back and someone would come out that week to get him .. I never received a call or any type of reconntion after calling back a second time. I know nothing about guinea pigs and it was almost impossible to get to talk to someone about him.. now the guinea pig is extremely sick and I feel like a bad person because of his current condition. IT IS EXTREMELY UNPROFESSIONAL AND INHUMANE TO HEAR OF A ABANDONED ANIMAL AND DO NOTHING!!

Sam van Kalkeren: Boston Dog Butlers does an amazing job grooming our dog. We take her about every 6 weeks for a groom, and she looks great each time. We've tried several different groomers, but Boston Dog Butlers is the best we've been to, and we are very happy with the work they do. Our dog is shy, but they do a great job with her.
Lorelie Davies: We have been using Boston Dog Butlers for over a year with our Golden Retriever and cannot fault them! Melissa does a fantastic job with our Golden, and listens to concerns or needs we have! I would highly recommend Melissa or BDB for any long / double coat dog that you have!
Scott Sullivan: Rarely will anyone work with a group of professionals like the Dog Butlers, from the owners, to the managers, to the dog walkers themselves. They are on top of everything, always. They care for our 14 year old little old lady of a dog each and every day and often overnight when travel cannot be avoided. They anticipate needs, keep you totally informed with all the latest tech (their app is simple to use), and provide specialized services (like grooming!). They are full service and fully committed to a job well done. Oh, and they love our dog, they really do!
Ashley Parry: We are so pleased with the service at Boston Dog Butlers! Our 10-month-old puppy, Arty, always comes back from his grooming appointments with staff member Cassidy looking (and smelling) great! We love that they use all natural products during grooming services. And, they are great communicators about coordinating pick up times. On a recent walk in the neighborhood, Arty sat outside Boston Dog Butlers whining, hoping he could go inside for another grooming appointment! We take his behavior as evidence that their staff members are attentive and loving toward our pup.
Catherine Hyden: BDB is the best! I’ve gone to them for 4 years and they have consistently provided incredible service with such kind employees. My dog gets nervous during appointments, but she always leaves happy. This place is truly incredible. I’ve moved yearly since coming to the city, but I’d drive anywhere for the service at Boston Dog Butlers! Mercedes specifically is my go-to groomer, she’s the best.
Juliana Shulman-Laniel: We needed our Copley to get a quick partial groom (basically, he needed a better quality bath than we could give and a butt area trim to keep clean!) and we were surprised to find so few local groomers offer this service. Luckily, Boston Dog Butlers was happy to accommodate us and got us in quickly! Not only did he come back with his nails trimmed and his butt clean, but he smells amazing, is all fluffed out/adorable, and is just generally beautiful. They were communicative, easy to schedule, and gave us a 40-minute heads up when it was time to get him (and stuck to the original timing promised). A great experience all around and we look forward to bringing Copley back for future groomings.

Mark Watkins: Boston Dog Butlers has been taking great care of my boxer Ruby. I can tell you that Ruby loves it when they come to pick her up. Tom takes her on her daily walks and she's been going on weekly hikes with Brittany both who give her a lot of care, attention and make sure she's taken care of. I am very comfortable knowing that she's in very capable hands.

Every time our dog has come back, his nails are so long that we can hear them on the floor; they don’t seem like they’ve been cut at all.We are considering taking our business elsewhere.
