Rob Goodwin: This place was a really great place get a Guinness. It was poured perfectly by the reasonably friendly staff. The issue is the entire place smelled literally like a dumpster. The smell was so foul we could barley finish our Guinness. That says a lot for a Guinness drinker. You have a good Irish pub thing going on but no one at all was phased by the smell and one person in our party nearly passed out. Hopefully it was a one time thing but beware if you smell trash, you man not want to get seated. Hopefully we can get that stench out of our cloths.

Eamon Whyte: Just arrived into MJ O'connor's after a long journey from Dublin, 16th March 2023 approximately 10pm. Looking forward to St.Patrick's weekend on Boston. We decided to head into this bar for a couple of drinks. My wife asked for our drinks from a grey haired guy in a black polo short. On discovering where she was from he remarked, ' oh you Irish, you're like rabbits over here! '. My wife only told me the next day back in our hotel. If I'd known I'd have complained to his boss about his RACIST tone and OBNOXIOUS service. Suffice it to say, we never went back and we never will. There are nicer bars in bars Boston like O'Keefe's, Ned Devine's and others. You'll be more welcome there.

The Black Rose: what do users think?
Michael Birkel: Solid Irish pub restaurant. It's got the atmosphere perfect. Guinness was delicious. Food was very tasty. Only complaint is that the chicken pot pie was not very filling. Tasted great thoughFood: 4/5|Service: 4/5|Atmosphere: 5/5 …More
Wanda Brown: We visited mid afternoon for a late lunch. The place was only 1/2 full but the noice level was very high to the point of not being able to chat with my dining partner. I had the Shepherds Pie and was not impressed. I’m used to a pie with a meat gravy - the tomato paste was more predominant than the gravy flavor. In addition, the potatoes were very dry and lumpy vs the creamy smooth topping that I like. The Irish coffee was good!
T.J. Haas: Came in for a few drinks prior to airport departure back to Florida and stayed until last possible minute. Great staff all around and shared stories with manager of the day Jamie. Great atmosphere, staff, and band that started at 5pm.Ready for a return trip already and will absolutely be returning to The Black Rose for all it has to offer. Thank you to all for the hospitality and great time! See you soon! TJ and Jen from Tampa Fl

Tanya Comeaux: Visiting Boston you have to go to an Irish Pub and order Fish and Chips. They had a live Irish band playing music and the atmosphere was A-1. As we sit enjoying the music a young lady comes to our table with the same monotone look (and later voice) that she had for the duration of our visit. I do not like monotone service. I will take at least 1 smile and 1 influx in your voice but none is absolutely a no for me. Only reason I gave her a 2 star is because she made me a good Arnold Palmer. We ordered Fish and Chips at an Irish Pub and just knew it would take us to Ireland. We got closer to Ireland at Captain Ds. We had crinkle fries that I buy from dollar tree for my grandkids and fried mushy haddock (could have been cod but would not have made it better) that just was not good.We are well traveled and huge foodies. I would give this place another chance as we all deserve 1 but it will be awhile. Boston was a great town too. I will visit again. BGTN (Black Girl Travel Notes)
Aaron Frank: Great bar, great food. What you expect from an Irish pub bar. The live music was 5 star. However, it was a tat loud and we could barely talk. We brought it to the attention of the staff but they friendly said we see what we can do and left it loudly. I bet other times it may be better but it took off a star as we left daily quickly after the good food.
Jimmy M.: Food: 5/5|Service: 4/5|Atmosphere: 5/5More
Nick: Went for a nightcap and had a great time. Live music was awesome. We came back the next night for dinner and drinks. Different band, but equally as great. Food was good, beer selection was good too.
Mark Mazzaferro: There is no better place to visit on my first night in Boston. Grabbed a Guinness and their Jameson Whiskey Wings while enjoying live Irish Pub Music.Food: 5/5|Service: 5/5|Atmosphere: 5/5 …More
Justin Martin: Fantastic traditional Irish pub. The Shepherd's Pie is delicious, and every dish that I've tried has felt like it includes really quality ingredients. The whiskey and scotch selection is not extensive, but includes things I really like, so it works for me. I love the old building too, I always appreciate the aesthetics and functionality balance of past generations.
Adrian Aicken: Asked the doorman what time the bar closed he said "none of your business"Service: 1/5|Atmosphere: 2/5 …More

J.J. Foley's Cafe: what do users think?
Robert G. “Southie Bob”: Great place for drinks at the bar and good tavern/ pub food. Lot of history here... old location a little down the old Dover street T stop. One story... a guy came in to rob Foleys, pulled a gun, stick ''em up.. and all the cops in the place pulled there's and said.. What??? The guy ran out ! Have a good lunch. Check out the old pics and sport stuff. .

Ryan Daley: St Patrick's Day '23. Wait 30 min. to pounce on vacated seating. Many others and I sit at dirty tables for over an hour waiting for any waitstaff to come within shouting distance to bus dirty dishes, and take order. Still waiting...Drink and App order taken along with my card (up front) about 15 minutes ago. Still no drink (or app.)... Going to go to the bar with cash. They closed the kitchen before 9 with no warning so no dinner after the app. Here from 6-9+ and couldn't even order dinner. Took 2 hours to get served. Yes it was St Pat's but won't be back. O'Connor's in Worcester is 3x the size and capacity and their service puts this place to shame. Worth the drive, but get there and home safely & responsibly.
David Modiclan: The food was excellent, once we were able to get to a table. Very crazy on St. Patrick's Day; the staff was doing their best, but very crowded and slow to get food or drink, but well worth it when we did.Got the Foley Fireball and Duck Poutine Fries, as well as an excellent Shepard's pie. Would highly recommend... Just maybe pick a less busy night.
Elijah Francois: Worst bar experience ; I went in for a Grubhub order the Bartender/Waiter saw me & walked the other way I went to look for him and he still didn’t ask what I needed. Then he said the order never came in then slammed a tray next to me. I felt the racist tension. All white bar and grille.
Daniel Moran: Staff was over the top friendly. Food and drink super good. Coming back here every time we have to come to Boston. New Favorite spot.Kid-friendliness: Staff was super friendly to my son who is up in Boston for Surgery at children's hospital.
Peggy Sellon: Had a great time..we were at a partyFood: 5/5|Service: 5/5|Atmosphere: 5/5 …More

Paddy O's: what do users think?
Laura Tuttle Williams: Went on a Thursday at lunch. Everything we asked for they were out of. No hot dogs, pizza, cheeseburgers etc. they did have burnt nachos. Which we said no to when they came to the table. Refused to take it off the bill. Attached is the menu and pictures of the nachos.
crystal k: Great little spot to people watch... especially when the garden market is on!
richard greene: Good service was expensive though
Audrey Roncevich: Excellent service
David Kowalczyk: Love this place. Lots of TV's. Lots.of good beer. Great staff.
William Odonovan: Went there today with a bunch of my Irish nationals to watch an international rugby game free on network tv. There were doormen demanding if you were Irish you had to pay a $10 cover charge to go in to watch game if you were not it was free to enter. What are we back at the turn or the century where no Irish need apply. Total disgust. I taught we had come a long way from that. Bar staff were great. Stayed for game at that point as would miss if gone somewhere else but will never set foot in again. My wife and daughters have a wide social network will warn everyone and beyond to not go here for rugby World Cup coming up in September
J G: I would give 0 stars if I could. My friends and I decided to try this place out because there is no cover fee and there was a sign outside advertising $3 drafts. We walk inside and they're playing bad music and out of the 10 people inside, no one is vibing. We order a drink and trying to make the most of it we give the dj (dj eloy) a song request. He waved us away with his finger and later approached us after coming down from his booth to ask what we wanted. He told us he did not have the song we requested, but played it 5 minutes later, which was nice but a bit odd. Someone else requested a song a few minutes later and he was extremely condescending and incredibly rude. He got on the mic and repeated no less than 5 times to the entire bar that he was not taking song requests for the next 30 minutes and said to "use your comprehension skills." I am not sure if he understands the word comprehension because there was not even time to request another song after he started yelling "no more requests" and was becoming increasingly frustrated. After waiting 30 minutes we politely asked to request another song, to which he said he does not take requests, only song suggestions. I do not know what power trip this guy was on, and I don't want to attack his character but there was no reason this guy should've had as big of an ego as he did. Then, to end the night we find out that the $3 drafts were a lie and our 6 drinks were a total of $80. I do not recommend coming to this place unless you want to be swindled and scammed.
Chriso: Only $3 for a beer! I repeat only $3 for a beer!!
Korbinian Zollner: Not accepting „international IDs“ is discriminatory
shashank shet: Was here for NYE. DJ was aweful. Drinks were great.
Hidden Gem: Great place to catch a game. Lots of seating and the projectors are definitely a plus. Bartenders were friendly and Guinness was poured well. Not sure why the reviews are so low but definitely a place I’d visit again
Daniel Ware: Great hometown feel with a nice audio arrangement and cheap drinks!
S.: Rude staff + horrible music playing. Read the crowd! No one wants to dance to 70s music in 2022! Had to bounce after one drink.
J: Wyatt is the man!
Vppa Verein Plastic Planet Austria: Zu wenig Licht
Ben Difranco: Bouncer at the door had a problem with my boyfriend and I from the get go and told us that people like us aren’t served here…yes we are very clearly gay…
Chris Carriero: Sign says some special that mysteriously doesn’t exist inside.
David Bishop: Nice place but they closed at 7pm on a holiday.
Patrick Bain: My friend ordered a Miller high Life 3 times and got three different drinks. Service was also slow. Would definitely not recommend
Jimmy Brockman: Good bar for the Celtics game and a Guinness.
Jasmin: Went here around 8PM Saturday 5/27 Memorial Day weekend. At the door the guy asked for ten dollars each to come in. Whatever we gave him 10$. When we went to the bar we were there for 20+ minutes. No menu or no attention. Finally the one male bartender came over after talking to his friends and asked us what we wanted. We asked what they had for bottles. He said- check online and here then get back to me when you are ready. We left right after.

Emmets: what do users think?
Tom W: Was excited to try this place based on the menu and item selections I saw when passing by. Called in advance to make a reservation, was told they would check what time and put me on hold for 15 minutes. I was nearby anyway so I walked over and got right in. Was seated and I'm still waiting for a waitress after 15 minutes of sitting at the table. Likely won't be able to try any of the food here.Update-when we did get service (fyi..place was not busy), the food arrived quickly and we had the trio sampler which was excellent. Very happy about the food which outweighed the service.

Anahita Babaie: Highly recommended. Great food and atmosphere and nice staff. We ordered Fish N'Chips, Shepherd's pie and House marinated stack tips. All of them were tasty and the portions were large. One Fish N'chips would be enough for two people. overall it was a good experience
Milosz M: Very unpolite place. We have ordered food and drinks. When drink arrived to table we have been informed that next reservation is in 15min ans we should do our drinks in that time. Waitress was extremely rude when we informed that maybe 15min is too fast for our drinks...
Meghan Rardin: Cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, and the best corned beef and cabbage.
Miles Goldstein: Usually great food, decently fair prices. Last time, the service was slow and inattentive. Took us a long time to even get water, and when we did, it tasted gross and had to be thrown out. There was a also a rat that they didn’t seem to care about.Solid restaurant, but avoid them for a bit until they get their service/hygiene under control.Onion Soup is too sweet, also, but tomato soup is good.
Kelly Cambridgeport: Emmets, where have you been all my life? I took a different walking path to the Boston Athenaeum and came across this cute pub. On my way back home, I decided to try it out. The onion soup and the fish and chips are both remarkable. The fried fish is one of the best I have tasted, and I have eaten many a fish and chips. Fries were piping hot, coleslaw creamy and top-notch. Full ketchup bottle on the table. The servers were very attentive and friendly. They checked frequently on their guests and refilled water. Definitely coming back. Hostesses were very helpful and friendly.

Hennessy’s Bar: what do users think?
Nikoloz Gogilidze: Went there for lunch on Friday. it was not crowded. great selection of local craft beers. Oysters were fresh and burger was done as ordered (raw cooked wih no tomatoes). Good thing about burger is that you can build it according to your taste. And the bartender was a great guy. Former military who served in army for 10 years. very friendly guy. enjoyed talking with him. Price is quite cheap for boston standard. Ordered half dozen oysters, Burger and 3 beers. Bill came for 37 USD.
Gary Anderson: Great place to get some oysters, and beers!!
Cheepers _: Delicious spicy kimchi chicken sandwich! Was the place where I had my first IPA (a local brewery "Harpoon"). Will definitely come back when I visit Boston again!
Sean L: DO NOT GO TO. Plenty of other great bars right by. Rude staff and sub par bar.
Jasmine Duong: It was a Friday night, 2 hours before the bar closed. This bouncer was so rude (whoever the young person working on 4/21 was), told him that he was 19 at most even though he was almost 22 and graduating, and almost broke his very real IDs before even scanning or boxing it. After that, even though he knew that it was dead inside, he still charged cover for every person and jeered that we wouldn’t get our money back at the end, before we knew that there was a total of 4 people in the whole bar. The second we got past the bouncer and paid cover, another worker immediately told us it was completely dead. We went upstairs because there was nothing else we could do. Then, the dj refused to take a song request even though there was no one else beside 2 other people and the staff. Terrible place do not come here. I understand it’s a business but it felt like a total scam. Not worth it go literally anywhere else or stay home. It was my 21st birthday and they made all of us feel horrible.
GARRY SCULLY: Very quiet
Paul Mackbach: Much better then sam adams
Bernard Mcgonagle: Great staff
Lisa: Don't waste your time. We stopped in one Saturday because the surrounding bars were packed and this place was dead and had seats open at the bar as no one else was there..I guess there was a reason for that. The bartender didn't even acknowledge us when we sat down and walked by us doing other things for quite awhile before finally asking what we feel like...In the end I felt like punching him in the face. He was then extremely rude and obnoxious to the next patron who sat down and made a sarcastic comment to him like " go to a bar much?" after the guy asked him a question. Not a way to keep customers..if I was that guy I would have walked right out. Then the entertainment arrived..a single guy playing guitar..first song was rock around the clock...seriously??? And the rest room was disgusting..run down and not clean. I couldnt finish my drink fast enough to get out of there!
Karen Wing: Fun place with live music on Saturday afternoon!
Daniel Dalia: Brilliant place,Good prices,Good music!
Peter C: Bouncers here are the worst. They wouldn't let me back in when I stepped out for not even 20 seconds for a little fresh air. Had to call my entire friend group to leave. Mind you it was like 12:45AM and there was a steady stream of people leaving. Drinks are terribly expensive (2 beers = 24$) and the music wasn't great either. There are plenty of other bars in the area, I would suggest you spend your 20$ cover somewhere else.
Joseph M: Great place and location but they were understaffed and it was busy. I think this wore out the bartender, Emily and she got salty with my friend.
Blair Genther: Food? Awesome. Drinks? Strong. Service? Jofurious (sp?) was a GREAT bartender! Go here.
Hector Longoria: Where else in the main part of the city can you get oysters for $1.50 a piece that are fresh and delicious? Tell me where if you know. The food is really good, service is excellent, drinks are strong, beer is ice cold and it's always clean. Every time my wife and I go out, we think of Hennessy first and have made this one of our happy spots for date night. We both highly recommend going in and trying this awesome bar even if it's just for a quick drink.
Sherry Tuttle: Went to a drag show upstairs, and the Queens were everything, they where beautiful and talented. We had a time that night lol great show and drinks
Ayan Paul: we danced out the night... :)
Nico Pereira: The 5’4 pontytailled male bartender threw a tempter tantrum because I stood in the way of his bottle throws into the recycle bin 13 seconds into entering. Music was nice and enjoyed the cheetah print carpet and odd vibes.
Amanda Maguire: Casual, laid back bar. I went at an off time, 5 pm on a Wednesday but the bar tender was great! I also saw they have entertainment every day of the week, tonight is karaoke. They also have $2 tacos and they are really good! And definitely very filling! Will definitely go back when it’s busy to check out how fun it gets!
Kuba F: Friendly staff and great selection of drink specials.
Erin Eagen: Miss the way it used to be- menu, atmosphere, etc.

John Harvey: On a raining day this place ticked the boxes on all we needed, beer !Service: 5/5 …More
Brian Perry: THE definition of an old school Irish pub. This is a local for those in the know and the lucky few that find it by accident. Family owned and operated for generations. These places are sadly passing away. But Foleys is as strong as ever. Buy local, spend local, and enjoy. There's no food here though.Food: 1/5|Service: 5/5|Atmosphere: 5/5 …More
Tone Loc: Nice place, great atmosphere. I'd definitely go back.Food: 5/5|Service: 5/5|Atmosphere: 5/5 …More
Ricardo Vergara: Fun class. Nice space.
Jessica S: We came in town for a Bruins game and fell into this great bar on accident. Can not recommend this bar enough!! The food was amazing and so generous in portions. The drinks were delicious. It was a welcoming environment and of we are ever back in town will be making it a point to stop back in.
Alison Cassidy: What a great place and hidden gem no matter which location you visit. They don't make them like this anymore!Service: 4/5|Atmosphere: 5/5 …More
Erin Nelson: Bartender pours 3/4 a beer and then steals your money by writing himself in a tip
lisa almada: My first time visiting JJ Folley restaurant was the day before St. Patrick’s Day this year of 2023. I sat back and watched this waiter “hustle” with a “friendly smile” on his face to all the customers he was serving, and was impressed by the way he handled everything. At the end of my stay, I asked to speak to the manager……And, when I did, I found out the gentleman’s name was Mike( the owners son) and it was his father, who owns the restaurant. “ Kudos to Mike” for providing us “excellent service” and I most definitely will come back again when I’m in the Boston area. Thank you Mike and family! ~~ Lisa (Rhode Island).
david shaw: Proper old fashioned Irish pub
Erin Graham: The staff are very attentive and welcoming. Drinks are always made right and the buffalo chicken is very good. Can't wait to go back again.Update: I can not say enough good things about this place. The atmosphere is always amazing. It feels like a familiar place even to people checking it out for the first time. My friends and I were suppose to be enjoying a "pub crawl" that was poorly organized. We decided to venture on our own and suggested we go to JJ Foley's. Our friends had the best time. The staff was kind and friendly making jokes with us. The atmosphere was welcoming and we met many new and interesting people. This is a boston gem!
Marie Gong: Recommended dishes Steamed DumplingsMore
Emre Övet: Less drink options + poorer service compared to their South Boston locationService: 2/5|Atmosphere: 4/5 …More
Jeremy Bake: Started as an after hours bar. Turns out I was just late to the game. Some of my best after hours times. Bar tenders, top notch. (remembered me a couple of weeks later.)Totes professional, always on the ball (not blowing me off for a hottie that walked up after me. Even if I might have. 😏I've gone back many times. Always the best!
Kat Olowu: Kitchen was closed. Bar only.Service: 4/5|Atmosphere: 4/5 …More
Tommy Reid: Iconic Irish pub, within walking distance of most anywhere in the downtown area. Old world feel, with bartenders dressed to impress.Service: 5/5|Atmosphere: 5/5 …More
thom reede: Great old, historic, Irish pub. Staff were fantastic so we returned the next night too.
Bruno Cerqueira: Pub de pessoas locais, indiferença com o turista não recomendo para quem quer tomar uma cerveja e curtir o momento.

Durty Nelly's: what do users think?
max lavallee: Wouldn't serve us because we were canadian and wouldn't give a reason as to why, basicly ignored us after they saw our canadian id's
Austin A: Place is gold. Be a local, act like a local, don't be a D. Bar staff is awesome. True Irish Boston pub. #iykyk
Sam Farmer: Waited 45 minutes on St paddy's day for this lol. Couldn't have been more than 20 people. And got kicked out of the halfway interesting upstairs bc we bought a drink downstairs. They tried to embarass us by stopping the music and telling all 10 of us to leave. Very confusing experience. Not worth the $8 buds
Kelly Craft: Great place and bartender
Freedom seeker: quick drinks, shots and a good laugh. It's a must visit for a quick drink before an airplane flight.
Lauren Rodgers: I was in the area and didn't want to spend a lot of money on lunch. I picked out Dirty Nelly's because of the very reasonable menu listed on their website. I walked over and discovered that they had a truncated menu with 4 of the 8 things listed online (didn't find out why, but confirmed that there weren't additional options). They didn't have wings on this menu which is what I wanted so I left.
Kylie Nichols: Best location and best place!
Tanner T: Solid dive bar! Staff was friendly and crowd was good when we were there. Didn't check out the other level, but It seems the crowd that hangs out here is fun to be around.
Suzanne Burton Taylor: Loved this bar. Great prices. Must go if visiting Boston.
levi cooper: Came here on New Years, what an incredible crew working. Vibes were great, very cozy. Staff is incredible & hard working. Whoever the bouncers/bartenders were seriously deserve a big thank you. You guys rock!
Joe Nash: Best avoid
Kent Williams: Arguably best dive bar in Boston. The bartenders are super nice and my fiends and I had a great time here last weekend!
Julie: I absolutely hate leaving a negative review but I have to. My friend and I were visiting Boston from Florida on Halloween weekend and we popped into this place because they looked like they had a good crowd and it looked the the perfect hole in the wall. We approached the bar and received nothing but attitude. They were not interested in serving us at all. In fact they literally said to us that they were too busy. We got the feeling that they only cater to the locals. Upon seeing the other reviews I think we were right. If you are an out of towner don't bother with this place. RUDE!!
Brian Bowen Jr: The best hidden gem of Boston bars. Very friendly bartenders
Henry Aufiero: Bartender has the worst attitude of all time. Dude you’re not that cool relax tone yourself down. Beer was kinda cold guiness was good outside of that not great.
Gretchen Cann: Nice “dive bar”. It’s clean comfortable staff and locals are friendly. The bartender was attentive and a pleasure to chat with. I would have no problem stopping by with friends or when I’m traveling solo.
Will Rhodes: Top 3 worst bar experiences we've ever had. Upstairs bartender, what a pr*ck.Ordered 4 diff beers. He poured them very confused and wrong. Like a training video for "how not to pour a beer". They were not carbonated and sour - all of them. We told him and there was no consideration of the quality: "This is how beer tastes. If you have a problem you can leave.". Ok dude.So we left. Not my first rodeo. The beer was filthy and flat. Enjoy "Durty Nelly's". Specializing in floating rat water.
Talie Delemere: Really actually great bar. Lovely music, nice setting and we thought the bar maid Roisin was lovely but when it came to paying she got all weird and kicked off about us splitting the payment. We were happy to take our time but she kicked off and then overcharged me. When I called out the overcharge she huffed and puffed and gave me my refund via cash (minus the tax already paid....) Avoid if you're a tourist
Samantha Amy: Hands down the best bar in Boston!! Good beers, good vibes, good tunes, better bartender. If you’re a fan of finding the local watering hole in each city, this is your spot! Will be a staple every time we come to Boston.
Tris Whitebear: $10 for a pint of Guiness. Criminal
Juliana Paredes: It’s a very small place to have drinks and uncomfortable. No food offered, only alcoholic beverages. There are two floors and it’s like in a building with apartments around.Staff seems nice but second floor bartender seems like he doesn’t want to be there so he’s annoyed when you don’t know what to order, ask him about it or talk to him.My husband and I had only a drink and left right away.Off atmosphere.
