Rola Languages: what do users think?
danny stone: I just finished a course in level 2 Spanish. The course was great and so was the teacher — I highly recommend!
Jacqueline Disch: Rola works with our school district and I had a wonderful experience taking Spanish for educators!
Rachel M: Rola Languages is such a gem! I have been enjoying my French classes very much (read: I love going to class each week because they are fun and I'm learning so much!), and Gina Marie is an excellent teacher. I love the classes and the opportunity to speak, hear, and converse in French - something language apps can't really offer you. To be honest, in level 1, I knew much of what we were learning, as I have attempted teaching myself French in the past and have picked up some basics. However, with the way Gina Marie teaches, I felt like I was enriching my limited knowledge in class - I was never bored, she made learning fun, and I even learned some new things as we went along, which was fantastic. I truly did not feel like I was repeating what I already knew while I was in class, I felt as if I was practicing to get better. Now I have moved onto Level 2 and it is equally as great. Thank goodness for Rola's online classes - I couldn't be happier that I am finally achieving my goal to learn French!
Simo Arredouani: Positive:Communication,Professionalism,Quality,ValueI would highly recommend Rola Languages to anyone who wishes to get on the path to polyglotism, or just improve their language skills. Very professional and experienced staff. Small class structure. Also a great opportunity to make new friends.
Gabrielle Rameriz: Positive:QualityBeen taking Spanish on and off with Rola for years, have always loved their teachers, commitment, and communication. Also when in person classes open again, it’s nice that they’re directly next to one of the best bagel places in Cambridge.
Angela Spignese: Professional, fun and great value. Would highly recommend to beginner or advanced language learners!
Joanie Weaver: Positive:Quality,ValueI’ve taken Intro 1-3 in Spanish with Rola and would recommend. I particularly enjoyed the intensive 10 day Intro 1 Spanish which had 1 hour of class per day each weekday for 2 weeks. While a bigger time commitment, it made learning and practicing so much easier to have class daily. Would recommend checking out their group classes!
william carter: Having studies with other programs in the area and ; therefore, being able to have a Real Comparison, I recommend Rola Languages. I feel that I LEARN. No fluff, no attitude , pure positive experience. The texts have been methodically thought out and planned to re-enforce the lessons. (As a former educator, they are excellent text, point on task.Administration and teachers support their students 100% for success.I can say they are AWESOME to work with.If you are serious to learn a foreign language quickly and with confidence;again, I highly recommend!
Walker Bristol: Positive:Communication,Professionalism,Quality,Value
Ali Eddy: Rola is great, one of the most affordable language schools in the area. I have taken french with them for the last year. I've never had a class with more than 6 people which is great. I have had the opportunity to get to know the other student's teacher and makes for a really fun learning environment where students can choose what we are most interested in learning and focusing on, and also creates a safe learning environment where people are not scared to mess up which is so important in learning a language!
Bethany Queior: Positive:Communication,QualityI've been taking French classes at RoLa for at least the last six years. I enjoy the small informal classes, the chance to meet new students, and the interesting teachers from all kinds of backgrounds and experiences. It's miles away from traditional classroom teaching and much more like spending time with friends.
Samaneh Mesbahi: Positive:Professionalism,Quality
Vitor Keller: I have been taking Portuguese classes here for two years and am so happy with the experience. The teachers are all very caring and knowledgeable. They have encouraged me when I felt my progress was slow and wanted to quit. I was so happy that I continued with their support because I am now able to communicate and understand a new language. Learning new things is not easy but with persistence, patience, and good coaches it is possible. Also, the location is very convenient, right in Porter Square, and I never had a problem parking at a meter close by the school.
Nikki Mincheva: I've been taking Spanish at Rola for a few years now. I started with their in-person group classes and later continued with their private online tutoring. I was amazed how well the online tutoring worked for me. The cost difference is not significant and you get to enjoy a one-on-one with your dedicated teacher. Everything in the class is catered to your style and speed of learning. It's an amazing value and I highly recommend it. Rola also has this family feel to it, everyone is very sweet and helpful. A very special shout-out to my adorable profesora--Almu!
Thomas Honnet: Depuis 2 ans, je prends des cours avec Erica qui est devenue une amie, et je travaille désormais en anglais, à l'international, alors que j'avais des difficultés à m'exprimer à l'oral. Merci ! :)
Chelsea Chin: I am so happy I found ROLA. I studied abroad in Spain and have been looking for a fun and affordable way to relearn the language. After multiple sessions with different teachers at RoLa, I have quickly improved my reading, writing and speaking abilities and look forward to my class each week. The teachers and students in the classes have all been great. Highly recommend RoLa!
Samantha Carter: I have been a student at RoLa for over a year and have taken classes in-person and virtually. I've absolutely loved the way that RoLa structures its classes. When I reached out to do a placement test, Erica helped coordinate one right away, and I spoke with the Portuguese teacher within a week. I was placed in the advanced level, which is mostly conversation with very helpful guidance from the teacher in the room/on the call. The teachers are very open to our suggestions, but also proactive in suggesting specific topics or vocabulary for us to work on as a group. I'd recommend RoLa to anyone looking to work on a Romance language - you'll learn and make some friends!
Carol: RoLa Languages is a gem of a school and community resource! It is small, intimate, and truly cares about its students. The staff have taken great care to create a community of learners that adds to the warmth and camaraderie of the school--enhancing the learning & cultural experience for everyone!
Caitlin Hemdal: I began Rola a little under a year ago to learn Spanish. I knew some basic vocabulary and phrases, but knew almost nothing about grammar, conjugations or written Spanish. In less than a year, the wonderful staff at Rola has dramatically improved both my writing and speaking. The small class sizes allow for a lot of individual attention; I now feel quite comfortable speaking with Spanish-speaking friends. Once I’ve finished Spanish I’ve even considered coming back to brush up on my French! I cannot recommend Rola enough!
Nancy Barcelo: Positive:Communication,Professionalism,Quality,ValueI have had a wonderful experience at Rola. The classes are small and the progression of the lessons are really helpful. I highly recommend Rola when wanting to learn a language as a beginner and as one advances.
Catherine Reilly: Both my children have been taking Spanish classes at Rola for a year now. Initially they took classes in person and now they have been doing them online. Their teacher has been really good at motivating them and finding exercises that are appropriate for their level. We have been very happy with our experience and both our kids have made significant progress with their Spanish.

Italian with Sabrina: what do users think?
Lisa Ciulla: Taking classes with Sabrina instead of using an app is so worth it! Sabrina teaches the foundation of the Italian language and not just words or phrases to have limited conversation. With Sabrina, you can learn to read, write and speak Italian in a warm, friendly environment that encourages you to learn. She is very knowledgeable of the Italian culture as well as the language which allows for a very interesting, well rounded and information packed lesson. She tailors each lesson to your ability and desire to learn. I highly recommend taking lesson with Sabrina!
Joseph Ciampaglio: Highly recommend Italian with Sabrina for anyone interested in Italian lessons, no matter what level. I wanted to take lessons to prepare for a family trip to Italy, and not having spoken Italian for many years I needed a refresher. I spent about 7 months taking one on one lessons and I can't think of a better way to get back up to speed.Sabrina made our lessons fun and engaging yet also challenging--but most importantly she really helped with my grammar. I don't think I realized how many mistakes I made when I spoke Italian, and she worked with me to polish my speaking ability. This helped me more than an app or textbook ever could. I really looked forward to my lessons each week, and feel more confident in my Italian now than I have in the past ten years. Thank you Sabrina!
JJ Bingel: Sabrina really is a top-notch Italian teacher. I wanted to learn Italian in order to apply for Italian citizenship and I can honestly say after almost 15 lessons (within a couple of months), I feel prepared to go to Italy and apply for citizenship via Jus Sanguinis. She helped me the most with speaking and listening. She is excellent at explaining grammar rules and catches every single mistake in written and oral expression. She also knows Spanish, which is my second language, and is able to tell me how grammar concepts in Spanish are in Italian. Above all, she is patient and engaging- the time during her 2 hour sessions really fly by as she tells you everything about Italian culture. I would recommend her classes to anyone that wants to learn Italian, regardless of their level.
Richard Gioiosa: I have spent the last year taking private Italian classes with Sabrina and I have to say it was really a great experience. Sabrina is patient and takes the time to explain how and why the language is different from English. Learning Italian was difficult at times for me, but I made it through a year with Sabrina's encouragement. If you are serious about learning Italian, I would highly recommend Sabrina. Wonderful teacher!
Maria Nemchuk: After trying to learn Italian on my own for a couple of years (Pimsleur, Duolingo) and making very little progress, I finally broke down and decided to take lessons. So glad I found Sabrina - she is a wonderful teacher and makes learning Italian fun. As a native speaker, she knows what expressions are actually used in living spoken language, which is important for speaking/understanding Italians in Italy. I really enjoy her lessons and made more progress than I could hoped for in 6 months!
Laura Lunardo: I have been taking Italian lessons with Sabrina for over 6 months and, with her expert help, am making great progress in refreshing my knowledge of the Italian I learned over 40 years ago! She is fun, charming and it is clear that she loves her students as well as the Italian language and culture. I do too!
Kathleen Benner Duble: Sabrina is a wonderful Italian teacher. Her enthusiasm is catching and she obviously loves what she does. She explains her subject clearly and moves along at a pace that is both challenging yet completely understandable. We highly recommend her.
Lara D: Sabrina is an excellent teacher who is very good at tailoring the lesson to the student. As a native speaker of Italian, she is not only able to teach "proper" Italian, but also teach true conversational Italian (sayings, common slang, etc). You can't really get this from a textbook, and it's so useful; especially if you are planning to use your language skills in Italy or with a native speaker. Whether you're a beginner, or looking to advance your language skills, I highly recommend her!
Amy Morrisett: I studied with Sabrina for almost four years during high school. It was simultaneously one of the most enjoyable and beneficial experiences I have ever had, both on an interpersonal level and on an academic level. In fact, the only reason I stopped taking lessons was because I am now at college and no longer have the time. Sabrina helped me improve my speaking skills exponentially, and she helped me perfect and enhance my grammar and vocabulary as well. I ranked nationally several years in a row on the National Italian Exam and received the highest score in New England on the AP Italian Exam my junior year thanks to her teaching and mentorship. It is clear that Sabrina genuinely cares about the success of her students and knows exactly how to help them achieve it, regardless of their end goal. Also, I genuinely looked forward to my lesson every week, as she is an incredibly effervescent and lovely person to be around. :) I would highly recommend her as a tutor.
Joanne Sorgini: When I signed up for group classes a little over a year ago, I wasn't sure what to expect. I had taken a few Italian classes in college that were large and quite impersonal, leaving me feeling very frustrated with my progress in speaking and writing. However, classes with Sabrina are very different. With groups of small numbers and with a teacher who is a native speaker, I feel that I have progressed immensely in such a short time. The focus is on conversing with others and to do so in a grammatically correct way. Topics are limitless, yet engaging and informative. A session can include listening to Italian music, interpreting a song, translating recipes, or even watching a video.Sabrina is extremely resourceful, and is keenly aware of every student's strengths and weaknesses. The environment is relaxed. She makes everyone comfortable in speaking at his/her own level and pace. Learning is happening without you even knowing it!Sabrina's command of the language and culture is impressive; her enthusiasm is infectious and inspiring! So, if you are thinking of taking Italian classes with Sabrina, sign up now.... It will be a decision you will not regret!
Luisa Granitto: I began taking Italian classes with Sabrina through the Concord/Carlisle adult education program about 7 years ago. I was going to be traveling in Italy and wanted to be able to speak and understand a bit of the language. From the first, I was impressed with Sabrina's love of teaching and focus on both conversation and grammar - I wanted to learn more than just a smattering of basic Italian phrases for travelers. I continued with these classes for 3 years (elementary & intermediate), and decided to go 1 step further - I began taking group classes with Sabrina at her home. I welcomed the change in atmosphere, from being in a large, sterile classroom with florescent lights and buzzing air system, to sitting around a table in a comfortable room. I still look forward to my Italian lessons and conversation every week! ... Also, several years ago I participated in one of Sabrina's trips (unusual for me because I'd only ever traveled with my husband or family) and felt it worthwhile both because of Sabrina's determination that the group try to speak only in Italian to increase our fluency, and because of Sabrina's true love of the country. I so appreciate everything Sabrina brings to teaching: her enthusiasm, sense of fun, real grasp of grammar and ability to explain it, and love of her profession.
Jacqueline Martindale: I have taken two years of Italian lessons with Sabrina and am very pleased with the lessons and results. I can now read easy books, take part in a basic conversation, ask questions on the phone with hotels, for instance, and much to my delight not being answered in English.Voglio dimostrare che quello che ho detto e vero. Se ci sono errori sono miei errori e non e colpa di Sabrina. E un piacere e vale la pena imparare o migliorare italiano con Sabrina.
Beth Ferber: Having been enchanted by the Italian language for years, I decided to take the plunge and try to learn the language. Little did I know after my first phone call to Sabrina that I had come upon just the right person to teach me. While I don't have an ear for language, I do have a curiosity that Sabrina appreciates and runs with. Sabrina has an enthusiasm for what she's teaching as well as the patience to continue to encourage a novice of the language like me. Like any good teacher, if I don't understand something, she has multiple ways of explaining it until I comprehend. Her enthusiasm is infectious and makes every lesson fun.Sabrina not only teaches grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary, but she also teaches the culture of Italy that only an Italian could. I had the opportunity to travel with her and other students to Puglia, Italy for a week. It was truly the insider's guide to Italy with each day full of new experiences and, of course, only Italian being spoken. What a great way to practice Italian! For anyone considering learning Italian, I highly recommend working with Sabrina.
Daphne Hatsopoulos: I have been taking private lessons with Sabrina for about six years. If I were doing the homework diligently, I ought to be speaking the language perfectly by now because she's such an excellent teacher. But even when I haven't done any written homework, we talk -- it's much harder to talk and understand than it is to do the homework so I don't feel too guilty when I haven't done any! We've become good friends over the years and our conversations -- always exclusively in Italian -- are interesting and lots of fun. This past May I joined a group of four other of her students for a week's trip to Verona. Making our headquarters in Verona, we visited Padova, Mantova, Lago di Garda and Trento. It was a wonderful trip.
Sarah Lawrence: I am SO excited to be working with Sabrina. I have wanted to really LEARN Italian for many years, but several of the other techniques and teachers I worked with weren’t the right “fit”.It seems as if I have learned more in the 5-weeks that I have been working with her, than I did for the past 5-years of trying different methods, different programs, and different philosophies.Sabrina has so much patience, enthusiasm and knowledge for the Italian language and Italy, that it’s impossible to not get caught up in the excitement of learning. The work is hard, and she spends time correcting and explaining mistakes, as well as praising good work. She teaches the basics of grammar, proper pronunciation, idioms and spelling, all while we are having a great time.I would highly recommend Italian with Sabrina for anyone, at any stage of learning from beginners to fluent speakers. Learning is a constant and life-long process!

Boston Area Spanish Exchange: what do users think?
Jessie Colbert: We have been working with Soheila Ayouboff at BASE for several years and she is an absolutely excellent Arabic teacher. She works with our middle school son and makes the learning inspiring, relevant, and fun. He is excited for the lessons and now has excellent Arabic writing, speaking, and comprehension skills. Soheila is a total joy to work with and we cannot recommend her more highly! BASE has also been easy to work with and coordinate the lessons with Soheila.
Julia: I took two intensive classes at BASE, the most recent one via Zoom with Elaine. I like that the classes are more conversationally driven, especially the fact that homework was designed to incorporate both grammar practice and preparation for conversation during the next class. Because we each had a lot of leeway over the conversation material we prepared for each class, the class discussions felt organic and interesting, like chatting with a group of new friends over drinks. I also gained a ton of useful vocabulary needed for day to day conversations, as opposed to what is covered in textbooks. Elaine did a really great job fostering a comfortable environment to chat in Spanish without being afraid to make mistakes, and gently drawing out the shy ones from their shell. The classes were a fun way to shake up an otherwise monotonous daily routine during social distancing, and my Spanish SO says my speaking has improved significantly after I finished the last course period. I’ve also interacted with the owners, Bill and Lorena, for logistics and when they've substituted for classes, and they are both great to work with.
Sarah: I really appreciate how communicative and friendly the staff is here. The classes are a fair price, and the Arabic teachers are very committed. However, as someone who has taken many language classes, I feel the pedagogy is not modern or effective. The teachers push speed, correctness, and content over letting the students speak and make mistakes.
cristina rodrigues: I have loved my experience at BASE and learned SO much. I walked in with basically no Spanish and am now conversational. It was important that from the very first class we were being taught in Spanish and we were getting to know each other in Spanish. I learned so much more quickly because of that. You get into a rhythm there. The teachers are full of energy, warmth and knowledge. Regardless of your level, they make you feel comfortable speaking in Spanish, making mistakes and learning out loud. We discussed all kinds of interesting topics in class. The teachers are also very generous responding to email questions outside of class time. As a school they understand that sometimes scheduling conflicts are inevitable so they will let you make up classes you miss. Its also been wonderful meeting other people interested in learning Spanish, traveling and community building - people with interesting stories of their own. I have made friends who have increased my motivation to go back. And the location is amazing - right outside of Downtown Crossing. I enthusiastically recommend BASE!
Brahm Gartner: BASE is a truly wonderful language school with truly wonderful people behind it. I first heard about them through the Boston Calendar at the start of the year, and since then have been participating in a variety of events that they've hosted in person and online. Great people, great vibes, fostering community through language and cultural exchange.
Ky Lea Gerbush: If you are looking for an amazing place to learn Spanish, and a community full of great people, BASE is it. My husband and I started taking Spanish lessons at BASE last semester and we could not be more impressed. First, their rates are so reasonable, literaly the most affordable place for high quality Spanish lessons! Second, the instructors are INCREDABLE. We had Luis for Basico A, and he was just so great. The classes are small, he takes tons of time to answer questions and give one on one attention to students. He also gets you speaking from day one. Third, they are really building a community at BASE. There are game nights, Spanish speaking lunchs, really just anything to bring people together and speaking spanish. Finally, they are the most understanding and personalized business. We had signed up to take Basico B, and were all preped to take it online because of social distancing, but then we needed to drop out of the class in order to travel to take care of some family. BASE was so understanding and kind. They are allowing up to take the class next semester, even though the semester had already started. If you are even considering taking a class with BASE, GO FOR IT, you will not regret it.
Emma S: I loved taking Spanish lessons at BASE. Everyone was so friendly and I had some great teachers! Elaine and Luis were fantastic.
Danielle W: I am now on my second course with BASE and I am so happy with the program! I will definitely continue to sign up for classes in the future. Elaine is a wonderful spanish teacher and it seems like the other teachers are great too!
Jessica Fujimori: I've taken Spanish, Arabic, and Farsi (Persian) classes here and had great experiences in all! The prices cannot be beat (truly incredible value for language classes in Boston) and the teachers are warm, welcoming, and skilled. Great community for language learners of all levels.
Benny Losordo: I studied Spanish at BASE one night a week for about two years. I learned a ton and had a great time! Highly recommended!
Eric Dorenzo: I very rarely write reviews, but considering how happy I am with my choice to come to BASE for my first few Spanish courses, I wanted to put it out there for others! So far I have take two courses, covering 4 total levels (Basic A-C and Intermediate A). They also offer less intensive classes as well as private and semi-private options as well, but considering I was looking for conversational practice I chose the group option. Bill (the director/owner of the program with his wife) and all of the teachers are friendly, attentive, and do their best to make you feel welcome and comfortable. This school is also located in the heart of Downtown Crossing, which made it super convenient and was among the most reasonably priced options out there (including the Centers for Adult Ed.).At first I was apprehensive to start with classes, as this is more of an "exchange", as the name implies, and has a fairly informal office space setting. However, my worries were immediately set aside when I met Bill and my teacher, Elaine. From day one I felt confident that I was in good hands. She was always engaged and focused with myself and other students, catering to the varying experience levels in my class so as not to leave anyone behind or bore anyone. While the curriculum is set by the course level, she kept the class fresh and was consistently challenging us with homework and in-class conversation sessions. I also took a few make-ups with another teacher, Ricardo, who had his own style of teaching but was equally engaged and concerned with his students' progress.Overall, I feel I gained a lot from my time so far (~14 weeks), going from someone with a very basic comprehension level and non-existent speaking skill, to a much more confident and capable reader, listener and speaker. While I still have a long ways to go, I am happy in particular with the confidence Bill and his team have built in my abilities!
Varun Agrawal: I never made it past the unhelpful receptionist who gave one word answers to everything , and then made me feel stupid for asking about their methods and objectives. Learning a language requires patience from both the students and the teachers, and an attitude of making a prospective student feel silly for asking questions is a big red flag.
Antje Duvekot: Amazing! So great. They make language learning super fun and engaging. Every teacher I've had there so far has been extraordinary! I suspect this is not coincidence, but rather because they only hire the best!
Perry Carrison: Best language school, best methods of teaching in Boston.
Christian Ternus: Absolutely fantastic. I'm taking Básico A/B Semi-intensivo and loving every minute of it -- truly remarkable for an evening class after a long day of work!I feel comfortable constructing Spanish sentences after only five classes. The immersive format makes class a real brain workout -- Profesora Calderon starts speaking Spanish from the first minute of the first class, and you're expected to keep up. She keeps our class's attention, mixing just the right amount of essential cultural info and engaging stories with the instruction. It helps that "los profesors Bill y Lorena" are truly wonderful people -- kind, outgoing, bright, and charismatic. To top it all off, it's convenient. The building is close to the Park Street T stop -- less than two minutes away.In short, I can't imagine a better place to study Spanish. Sign up for a class -- you'll be glad you did. Hasta luego!

Seferine Baez: FLS is a wonderful English language program. Students are exposed to a variety of different activities in the Boston area, whether they be related to art, history, and culture. The elective classes help students to specialize their time while also completing a core course. They don't level up until showing that they are demonstratively ready to and the area is rich in colleges and universities at which students can enroll once they are ready to apply.
laura garcia jimenez: Studying English in FLS is a really good experience because at the same time that you are learning, you can meet people of different parts of the world and have many interesting and funny activities😃

Luig Dias Vaz: The best english school that I had ever been into.

OjosMedia Luna: Critical:Communication,Professionalism,Quality,ValueSchool manager rob is abusive and yelling at everyone. We complain about it
The experience was very good because the teacher had an excellent didactic. What left him wanting, was that the school does not provide any book for students to study at home. They only lend the books during class. It would be interesting if at least they had some material of their own that would facilitate the students' learning mainly in the homeworks.
