Cambridge Traffic, Parking & Transportation Department: what do users think?
Jung Won Lee: Lots of negative reviews dating back multiple years. But nothing changes and same things happen again. It means that not only workers at this office but also residents in this city including Mayor don't care about it. They do what they have been doing. Nothing will change in this old city. Harvard? MIT? Spirit of America? Yes. They are all prestige. But the city where the prestige sits on erases all that prestige. Unfortunately, I became a victim of this arrogant, inefficient and nothing-will-change city. As a first time visitor to this city and a naive Californian who admires "the Spirit of America", I got a wrongly issued parking ticket (simply confusing a letter O with a number 0) and came here to appeal it just like I normally do in California. And I was surprised after I saw how civil workers were handling this simple issue(O and 0). They don't even listen to me. Just order me to fill out the form and walk away. How long will it take? They said EIGHT weeks. I can't believe this simple issue will take that long time. But more surprisingly, people around me (mostly they are white) started giggling at me very loudly. Feeling frustrated and alienated, I ran out of the office. After I read all negative reviews on Google, I regret coming to this office to appeal it. I should have paid the ticket without appealing.Nobody cares. Nobody wants to change. Not only civil workers but also residents in this old city don't care and don't want to change. Lots of negative reviews dating back multiple years prove it. Nothing will change. They just do what they have been doing. They just live the way they have been living. And when they find someone like me who don't understand what they are doing, they giggle. In this old city, everybody is old no matter how old they actually are.I realized that I am a naive Californian who admires this old city and people. I know that this review like all other reviews will surely be the waste of time. Good Job! The spirit of America. Well done! The city where the spirit sits on.
V.S.: On April 1, 2023, I discovered that my vehicle was towed along with my neighbor's vehicle. I am someone who very carefully monitors any signs that a parking spot may be reserved for a moving van as my vehicle can easily get damaged during towing. On March 31, 2023 no such sign was there in the evening and the City is required to post the signs at least 24 hours ahead of the scheduled move. But, the sign magically appeared on April 1, 2023 and my vehicle was towed that morning. I had no option but to pay $100 to the towing company.
Anya Bernstein: This office is making living in Cambridge miserable. Their website never works, they NEVER answer the phone and NEVER answer the emails, no matter how many times you try to contact them and leave a message. After over 12 years living in Cambridge, the simplest task such as renewing resident parking sticker is still an insurmountable task (online option does not work), requiring taking time off work. I do not understand my taxes should fund the people who don't do the basics of their jobs. Just awful and corrupt.
ngoc shave: Wrongly ticket people car just to get scores cuz they know you won’t have time to dispute! But I do!!!!
Mihir Shrestha: They never answer the phone or their email to answer dispute questions.
Kev: Called this morning because a ticket is falsely assigned to my vehicle, with a false license plate too (the officer thought an "O" is "0"). The young lady is super nice and told me they will waive it. Respect to the Americans from your northern neighbour!
Tom Thornton: Incredibly patient staff. Line gets long at mid-day.
Avery Houston: I received a ticket in May through a Passport parking malfunction due to parking at 7:50pm when the spaces are free at 8pm. I couldn't physically pay for parking for the last 10 minutes and received a ticket. I disputed the charge and explained the situation -- the parking services took 4 month to "review" my claim then denied it with literally no acknowledgement of reading my claim. I had to call the office for updates and still have not gotten my disputed ticket back in the mail. This is a predatory inefficient service with no sympathy even when I attempted to pay for the parking spot in the first place...
Joe W: This city is terrible.
Jacob Glassman: When I visited, the office had really good customer service, and I really appreciated that they had patience with my questions.
Andrew Tomeo: In 2011 I was ticketed frequently by Cambridge Parking to fill their quota. These were strictly for an expired inspection sticker. I tried explaining that I had to get my exhaust fixed and the tickets were predatory and exacerbated the problem. Recently I contacted Cambridge to try and correct the situation. I was told to call directly and have since been ignored for the past week. They want money only and are uninterested in anything else.
It’s Mezzy: Awful experience, both tellers were incredibly unhelpful and untimely. The teller told me that I needed to call the RMV and then gave me the incorrect number twice.
Anthony Puzyn: Worst road configurations in the country.Insane zig zag lanes, bike lanes, bus lanes , speed bumps. Removing all parking on Masks ave to accommodate bikes at the peril of every small business that counts on in person shopping. The roads are maintained by the taxes vehicle owners pay, not bicycles, not buses. The traffic backs up at the Museum where they block the intersection because of reduced automobile capacity from the bus & bicycle lanes. Seems reducing autonomy is the goal here. You want to push people to take a bike in a winter climate ora broken MBTA that breaks down every day. Wake up!
Michele Labrecque: I recently had an issue with parking passes for clinicians that service homebound patients. I emailed the city of Cambridge to have the issue corrected. I had the pleasure of working with this lovely lady named "Liz". She was extremely helpful, pleasant and quick to rectify the problem. The city of Cambridge is lucky to have her. Thank you Liz!
Matt Kind: Another unjustified ticket. I used Parking Passport and moved from 2518 to 2514 to 2516 and got an overtime ticket anyway. This parking policy creates vehicle emissions, wastes gas and gas money and causes lost work time. They would get more revenue if we just fed the meter.
Devrim Kettle: Your average government/bureaucracy.
Madeline Bennetti: most horrible experience I’ve ever had with public servants. these people gave completely contradictory information that resulted in me paying a ridiculous sum of money. originally I was told I could get a temporary resident parking permit using my lease and that I would likely get tickets and just needed to dispute them. when I went to take the 6 tickets in after my first week living in Cambridge, I was told I never was approved, despite having received no communications about this, and that I would not be refunded and could not apply for a resident parking until I paid them because I never had proper documentation to get the temporary permit. And they said I had no record of living in the town. An employee of the same office told me on the phone that my change of address had gone through and I did not need my registration, just to dispute my tickets and get that settled so I could get resident parking. my partner went through these exact steps and got completely different results. Glad I left work early multiple times to deal with this incompetency.
jake drutchas: Beyond the classic bureaucracy, this is an international town. But when one of their colleagues was speaking in a foreign language with a resident who spoke little English and the other employees were a bit derisive about it and that really sucked to see
Uzair Ali Khalid: I called their office to ask if I could use my lease agreement as proof of residency. An extremely rude woman, who could not even speak English clearly, refused to be helpful and continued to repeat "on the website it says 2 bills" and then when I said that I already know that, she lost her head and started saying angrily "Let me finish!"Learn some manners and try to be helpful. Do your job properly otherwise no need to answer the phone. Now I am planning on going to the office personally and showing them my lease agreement for a permit request as the lady on the phone was not helpful at all.
Mallory Griffin: Corrupt; very poor communication; as a government organization, extremely unclear how they are contributing to society
Avnish S.: Went to get a permit. Friendly and helpful staff and didn't have to wait
