Jessica P: This place needs to hire more bilingual tellers. My dad has had many difficulties with tellers not understanding what he needs done because of the language barrier. My dad is portuguese & speaks broken English and even then no one understands. But on a better note, there's always extra help to solve the problem & tellers who know my dad for a long time that step in to help one another but even so, more languages at naveo would be helpful for everyone.

Charles Bosse: The overwhelming majority of FCU's participate in shared branch banking, but not this one. On top of that, the location is a window in the back of city hall. I guess the fact that it's so hard to find should be a tip off that this is a decidedly "member only" club. The person at the window was polite enough in telling me I couldn't get what I needed there, but it's obvious once you get in that the organization mainly deals with city employee paychecks.

Annie Burrell: I walked in looking to get a personal loan and was connected with Nilsa Barbosa. She was so personable and kind, helped me understand everything I needed to know and made me feel super comfortable and informed. She called the loans office directly and got the loan approved the same day, while I was there! My experience was amazing and I have no hesitation rating my service with Ms. Barbosa 5 stars :) thank you!!!

I didn't show up to the brick and mortar branch to be told that....I'd like it done right now. Worthless.

Franck Dernoncourt: When I came to the US, I made the mistake to create an account at MIT Federal Credit Union.Three main issues:1. Good luck using it when you are outside Boston (internship/vacation/post-graduation)2. They gave me a credit card without explaining to me how it works in the US (I come from France where we don't distinguish credit cards from debit cards). I had no clue that not using or cancelling a credit card is not good for the credit history.3. Since they are a small bank, they have much fewer services than any large bank. (e.g. you cannot cash a check through some phone application)
Brandon Call: This is the worst banking entity I have ever worked with.At MITFCU, account numbers are very short. This means it is easy for another member to accidentally mistype his account number and get yours. Another member used my account on auto pay for his credit card! I noticed a large charge from a bank I don't associate with and called MITFCU and they credited my account for the money, but they didn't do anything to track down and fix the problem. The next month the auto-pay happens again for another $3k. The person probably noticed that the money didn't get taken from their account and felt concern that their bill wasn't going to get paid so they ran it again. $6k out of my account. I called MITFCU multiple times on Friday, each time having to go through the lengthy verification process and then explain the two large mis-charges, and each time I got a different story. Do I fill out paper work or not? Each phone call ends with a promise that they will take care of it after the long holiday weekend. So I enter New-Year's weekend with $0 in my checking along with overdraft fees. MITFCU promised to call me first thing Tuesday morning when the right people showed up at work.There was no phone call Tuesday morning. I call MITFCU around noon and the Customer Service Rep has never heard of my problem and she still doesn't sound like she cares. By end of day Tuesday someone at MITFCU deposits $3k into my account. It would have been really nice if they would have called or emailed or something. When I checked my account, I find that they only fixed one of the two charges. They just can't get it right.I understand that errors happen, but MITFCU has demonstrated an inability to fix them and apathy toward customers that is unacceptable. Choose to do your banking anywhere else.

In general, HUECU's service in general has always surpassed my expectations and I have been especially thankful for the kind, caring service of the Harvard Square branch staff members who always surpass my expectations. Thank you!
C MALGWI: TRASHHHHHHHHHH!!! Do not bother wasting your time with this bank. Very unprofessional and clearly do not care about anything. After my father passed, we tried to handle his estate. Being that he was a Harvard Professor, they did not care even after he bank her for over 23 years. Because ROCHELLE GROVE and ANGELA LUONGO are incompetent and do not understand the probate process, they automatically declined a loan for myself and my mother minutes after Angela just told us all the documents we needed to gather AND telling us everything looked good! Might I add the reason for declining was a lie, because both my mother and I have excellent credit scores in the high 700 and 800’s. I am currently in the process of asking them to provide proof for their reasoning because something clearly is not adding up and I’m certain is because they probably do not know how to handle an estate. This bank needs better management because the people that work for this bank, do not add up to the prestigious name of this bank whatsoever. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THIS BANK!Thanks,Charity
Tzu-Ying Chuang: Fast/friendly service on the phone and in person. Responsive mortgage department, although having the HOA and escrow double payment has been very painful. They service their own mortgages so it has been nice to talk to the same staff. Quarters available in Harvard square too!
CT Cambridge: This is by far the worst bank in Cambridge to place your money. Please look into other institutions, Cambridge Savings Bank, East Cambridge Savings Bank, just to name two.
Brandon Pennington: I never had a bad experience with HUECU and their slow days of banking seem to almost be over. Recent upgrades and transitions made by HUECU are appealing to younger generations, including myself, and they have made banking more accessible with their upgraded mobile app. Most importantly, everyone at HUECU is beyond helpful!

Conor Hartnett: Really bad option if you ever travel internationally. I've been working abroad for a year and I've never been able to buy airline tickets with their debit card. Moreover, they keep freezing my card even though I change my address when I travel. They then insist that I call them (or receive a text) to have it un-frozen, as though one can easily call a US number and wait on the line for who-know-how-long from abroad. You would think that, as an institution that serves the Harvard community, they would have some experience with people traveling internationally, but apparently not.

Oxana Shevel: UPDATE: I am updating my review to reflect that fact that HUECU reached out to me and seem to have genuinely tried to understand and solve the problem I experiences with their card. They refunded me international phone call charges and updated me on the results of their investigation into what went wrong and what steps they took to prevent the problem from re-occuring. I found their explanation ultimately clear and reasonable, and although only my next international trip will tell for me personally if the problem indeed has been solved, I am updating my review to 4 stars for their efforts to address the problem.ORIGINAL REVIEW: I am giving one star (zero if I could) to the incompetent way they handle foreign transactions of my Harvard Alumni Mastercard. I have been a card holder for well over 10 years. Usually I rely on this card to shop while abroad since there is no foreign transaction fee. I just came back from 2 weeks in Eastern Europe. During these two weeks I had to call these people 6 times - yes, 6! - because my card kept getting blocked. I put a travel notice on the account and yet it kept being blocked and no one at this HUECU card member services could do anything other than to express how sorry they are. I was given the same constant run around - called card member services to be verified, transferred to card member security to be re-verifed, card unblocked, next day card gets blocked again. Frustrating beyond belief, not to mention the expense and hassle of calling international, wasting time on my vacation, and the constant stress of not knowing whether or not I can check out of a store with purchases. HUECU must have a better way to address such situation - if their algorithm repeatedly flags transactions and member already put a travel notice and already called, find a better algorithm, do manual override, so something! Their claim to be "not just a bank but a benefit" is a joke.I would further add that unlike every other credit card under the sun, this one does not display statement balance online when you log in - only minimum payment or the overall balance as of this day. This is very inconvenient if you want to pay full statement balance to avoid fees - you have to dig for this information. I suspect they do it on purpose to slam you with interest.

Mohsen Malmir: had a terrible series of interaction with HUECU. First of all, without submitting an application, they checked our credit report, so beware! second, for a pre-approval, they can't use that credit report, so they need to do another credit check! I talked with an agent (Mike) that pretty much didn't give me any information. I believe he didn't even know the options such as piggy back. Anyway, go here for a terrible experience!

Yuanliang Meng: I submitted a mortgage pre-approval application last Thursday and heard nothing back until now (the end of Tuesday). The system said someone will contact me within two business days. I understand there are busy times but it's better to provide some response on time even if there's no progress. Otherwise a customer wonders if something goes wrong.
Andra Stroe: We have had an amazing experience working with HUECU for the mortgage on our first home. Daisy Familia has been absolutely wonderful: friendly, knowledgeable, responsive. Daisy and the underwriting team worked through our application very quickly and we were able to close within 3 weeks of signing the Purchase and Sale agreement. The closing costs and mortgage rate were also far better compared to other lenders. Altogether, I can wholeheartedly recommend HUECU.

Ben D. Sawyer: Not a useful credit union. Error prone, hard to communicate with (a useless phone line outside of 9-5 EST), a quirky, clunky online portal... MITFCU will waste your time to the detriment of your finances and, ultimately, life. Bank elsewhere.

Neelkanth Bardhan: Awesome "starter bank" for new students joining MIT - especially if you're fresh out of college, or new to the USA - i.e. without any prior credit history. They have very friendly employees who will get you set up, and even offer you a regular credit card (not one of those pre-paid ones) with a generous spending limit to slowly build up your credit score.However for more sophisticated banking needs - there are better options to be found nearby.
