After a fair amount of finagling over the quote, they responded that the damage was too great and they were unable to save any of my files. I decided to get a second opinion locally. Chris was not originally very optimistic considering the first feedback, but he was super diligent and he was finally able to salvage a significant percentage of my photos (which I had asked him to target). Not all, but a lot of them, which is better than none. Final price was less than quoted by the other company. Chris was also very patient in giving me advice about other ways I might attempt to salvage the rest of my photos as well as the best ways to back up my files. Definitely recommend.

While I was lucky that the disk wasn't damaged, it was still an onerous task for data recovery since it was hard to find an exact match for the firmware/hardware components. Daniel Torres: I managed to delete the data stored on a PC ATA card from an oceanographic instrument before it had been downloaded. These data were from a 2 year deployment. On top of that, the instrument was redeployed for 1 more year. So I thought the original 2 year data were lost. Unfortunately, the new data file wrote over the old data. But since that file was smaller, Chris was able to recover nearly 1 year of data from the original 2 year deployment (plus the second deployment). He did a phenomenal, professional job in just a few days. I highly recommend his services. Hopefully I will never need them again.

Most of my project files and photos documenting my life moments were on an external hard drive. I lost them when Bitlocker hit and stuck on a bad block on the hard drive and could not proceed with the encryption process (by the way, always make a backup before encrypting your hard drive). Originally, I reached out for a quote, and was directed to a case manager, who was very helpful, he was able to get my HDD's shipped to their Boston lab quickly, and the cost to me up front to review the data was $100 (not a bad price). Much to my disappointment, the data that I wanted to recover was gone for good (corrupted beyond their ability to repair), after going through the process, I got back my 2 external Seagate HDD's and both the external enclosures were damaged. After my original review, their customer service contacted me & we were able to work out a deal to cover the cost of repairing/replacing the damaged enclosures. Nowhere in any of the emails or on the phone calls was I informed that removing the HDD from the enclosure would be required... Now after speaking with customer service, I believe Data Tech will be making some changes to better inform their customers that removing the drives may be required in some cases. After my experience, I WOULD definitely recommend this company! I would still remind anyone with external drives to use caution, as any of the pre-sealed enclosures may not be able to be fully re-assembled as from the factory...

I was given an estimate of $1874 of which I paid $275 as an non-refundable parts fee on November 19, which is when I initiated the process. They told me it would take about 7-10 days but after two weeks I still hadn't heard from them and had to call them up. My case manager told me it would take another week. When I still didn't hear from them after a week, I called them up on December 16, and they told me that they couldn't recover the data.I get that the process of data recovery is unpredictable and that my hard drive is probably too damaged for anyone to do anything about it - what I don't appreciate is how terrible their communication was. I don't think they gave me an accurate picture of the probability of non-success, and they made me call them repeatedly to get basic updates. They made the experience (that was already quite stressful - data loss isn't pleasant) even worse. All the other reviews seem to indicate that their communication is wonderful, so I'm not sure what went wrong in my case.I finally went to collect the laptop on December 20 but they said they couldn't find the charger that I'd given them along with the laptop. They said they would mail it back if they found it, but given my experience with them so far, I expect to be emailing them repeatedly for the next month.
