Don Vitters: We hired S+H Construction in 2013 for a major renovation and small addition to our 100 year-old house in Arlington. The work was completed in 2014 and we were completely satisfied with the results and process.The scope of work included a complete renovation/addition to the existing kitchen, a complete renovation of the 2nd floor bathroom and 3rd floor bedroom plus the addition of a bathroom and study. A new heating and air-conditioning system was installed serving the 2nd and 3rd floor. In the kitchen and 2nd floor bathroom, the existing radiators were removed and replaced with a new sub-floor hot water heating system providing more space for cabinets and storage.During the entire pre-construction and construction phase, we were impressed with the level of detail and attention we received from S+H's project manager and construction superintendent. The sub-contractors were experienced, professional and responsive to any issues that arose. We would highly recommend S+H and hire them again should the opportunity arise.

The design team helped us figure out how to best meet our needs in the most cost efficient way and were very responsive to the ideas and concerns that we had. The project came in on time and under budget. The project manager was extremely responsible and skilled and all of the subcontractors were excellent. I recommend S&H highly!

Lucien Weisbrod: Over the years there have been too many small and large projects to recall. The most recent involved retrofitting our kitchen, installing a deck, gutting and totally remodeling our half bath and overseeing the removal of an antiquated heating system and replacing it with a compact and much more efficient one. Thanks to S+H's in-house range of skills and access to highly skilled subs, none of the projects required the service of an architect or designer. As general contractor, S+H did a superb job of guiding us through each phase of the project and coordinating the subs in a manner that was highly efficient and minimally intrusive on us (who were living in the house at the time of each project). However, nothing was more awe-inspiring than the up-beat atmosphere, trust and mutual respect that all trades people displayed on the job. There could have been no doubt that they have had extensive past history as colleagues and subscribed to common goals and objectives of the task at hand. We were almost sad to see them go when the job was over. (And our marriage was none the worse for wear)

President, Doug Hanna, and his staff have seen to it that all the sub-standard work performed by the previous contractor was corrected and all continuing work was done right ! The sub-contractors they use are exceptional, always making sure that we, the homeowners, understood the work performed and asked questions to make sure that we would be satisfied in the end. Issues were always addressed and acted upon, without delay, by the project manager and on-site supervisor. I would recommend S & H Construction with enthusiasm to anyone considering renovation work.

They built a bathroom, laundry room and master closet for our home, and the craftsmanship and thoughtfulness of the team was beyond our expectations. The team was responsible, respectful, clean, and friendly to the point that by the end of the project we felt like they were an extension of our family.

M C: Unfortunately the company was sold and the new owners have no sense of quality or customer service. Stay away from these guys if you have an expectation of quality or support. When I complained about the quality of their on-site supervision and requested a new on-site supervisor they unilaterally abandoned the job and I was required to get a new building permit. The new owner does poor work and seems incapable of understanding how to deal with customers who demand quality and service. Avoid them at all cost.

I usually don’t write about companies but I really just can’t believe how beautiful everything came out. Our kitchen was outdated and really needed some help. Now the compliments are endless. We love to entertain and just hangout in our new beautiful kitchen. I wish we could take credit even for the creativity ideas but it was all David of Ambience Construction/Remodeling. He was able to see potential for the space that we had never imagined. He did a lot more than change out cabinets, counter-tops and appliances. He made space that didn’t exist and he didn’t just modernize it; he made it artistic! I don’t need a single picture! My walls are art and I love it. I am in love with the details, uniqueness and of course usability. I have more space and more storage. Everything has a place now.Like most people, I had three companies come in and give me estimates and ideas. The other two were fine…but pretty basic. David was very creative and listened to what I wanted then came back with different sets of drawings of what I wanted…and what it could be. David really has an amazing eye for these things. He must have been an artist in another life? Among several other things…I really wanted an island in my kitchen. The other companies told me adding an island would really kill the space…the kitchen were just not big enough. This is an example where Ambience was more unique and thoughtful. David said the space was tight as it existed but he could work with it. He suggested moving things around, opening up the space where the stove was and having a built-in stove in the island in the middle of the kitchen. Now I have my island…which is also where everyone hangs out. I have more counter space and of course, beautiful cabinets, granite counter-tops, and even new “artistic” floors and walls with custom shelving. My walls are art! LOL. I really cannot recommend these guys more. David and his crew KNOW what they are doing! They were professional and stayed within budget. The best part was the results. I really can’t recommend Ambience enough.

Iris Gisela Matthews: Ambience Construction did an overall amazing job with our bathroom. They came in, completely stripped it (everything came out) and started from scratch. We had a pink, cast iron tub and I could not wait to get rid of it, it was hideous! We got all new materials (new tub, new toilet, new vanity, custom-made granite counter top, new wall tiles, new floors, new lighting, fixtures, etc). We initially had shower doors and purchased new ones to be installed but David convinced us otherwise - mainly because we have two children under the age of 5 and bathing them it's so much easier without shower doors so thank you so much for the advice, it has made bathing them so much easier! Our bathroom could not have been more perfect. We loved the job they did so much that we are talking about getting our kitchen renovated and they have already thrown out great ideas for us to start thinking about our next renovation project.
