Wiessmeyer Violins LLC: what do users think?
Bob Dick: I emailed Paul's shop to have two violins appraised. He replied quickly and was able to give me a prompt appointment. Upon arriving Paul greeted me with a very friendly attitude. He quickly looked at the violins and gave an initial sense that these were low level instruments, and suggested a verbal appraisal. This saved me a good deal of money. He then looked at them more closely and pointed out several reasons for low appraisal. I am a musician myself so we could discuss the details of the instruments easily. I really enjoyed my time at his shop, which is easy to get to despite being in Boston, and if I'm ever in the market for a quality violin, I would start with Paul Wiessmeyer!
Jeff Bigler: Paul is my go-to luthier for any and all work I need done on my violin or viola. He has an amazing depth of understanding of factors that affect the sound snd playability of the instruments, and every recommendation he has made has resulted in noticeable improvements in the sound of my instruments. He is also more candid than other luthiers I’ve worked with about recommending against spending money needlessly. Most recently, I asked him for recommendations to improve the ergonomics of my 16.5 inch viola. He cut a new bridge that made the instrument more playable and greatly improved the sound in the process. (This was no mean feat because the viola already had a great sound to begin with.)
Katrina Zhao: Paul is an extremely knowledgeable and experienced luthier who knows his craft and truly cares about instruments. I was having issues with the bridge and overall setup on my violin. Paul not only was able to help me set up a new bridge but also shaped the fingerboard to match the curvature of the bridge. The delicate changes he made to my violin has made a huge impact on my comfort and ease of playing. I am really grateful to have Paul working on my violin and highly recommend Paul as a luthier.
Mary Stelow: Paul graciously fit me in on a week's notice for a violin checkup/ consultation and also was able to quickly fix an issue with my tail loop. I will be returning if I need work done in the future. Thank you!
yayoi miya: I have two kids who have been playing violin for a long time, and they have full sized advanced student violins (paid around $2000). We have had trouble finding places for occasional maintenance and repairs at a reasonable price. Many other locations I have tried did not accept our violins (they told me that they dealt with only professional quality violins) or they gave me very unreasonable prices to repair. When one of our violin’s bridge finally collapsed, I again called many places for it to be fixed. As expected I was given very high prices or told that they were not accepting until April. When I found Wiesmeyer VIolins and called, he was very easy to talk to and told me that I could bring it in for a repair estimate for $35, which would all go to the repair fee if I decided to use him. When I was able to bring it to him the following week, he studied the violin and gave me a few recommendations. What impressed me most was his honesty in giving me the option of him fixing its very warped bridge when he could have simply sold me a new bridge. He informed me that for my son’s violin, paying for a new bridge was not necessary. Within a week, he fixed the bridge, replaced his inadequate chin rest, and did other maintenance for a very reasonable price. I sincerely thank Mr. Wiessmeyer for doing a great professional job on my son’s violin and for patiently explaining repairs that were needed. I am very happy to have finally found a great violin shop!
Michael Galvin: Paul did a wonderful job repairing my violin, and thankfully managed to fit me in on the same day. With many local shops booking repair appointments weeks to months in advance, it’s nice to find such an experienced luthier who makes the time to assist when it’s needed. He has a nice selection of accessories including handmade leather mutes which I’m super excited to try. Thanks for taking such great care of me today!
Mia Asano: One of the best experiences I've had with a violin shop. I had an emergency repair and Paul went out of his way to get it done within 24 hours so I could play at a very important gig. The service is always kind, the people that work there are all wonderful, and Paul is one of the most knowledgeable and informative luthiers I've met. I will definitely be coming back to Weissmeyer Violins for future repairs and rehairs!
Tim H: I had a great experience having my violin repaired with Paul Wiessmeyer. Paul has an incredible amount of experience and can diagnose issues with sound right away and explains the issues clearly. Workmanship is top notch - it’s a pleasure to work with Paul and it sure beats being just one of many at the large suburban shops.
Henry Ayanna: I had my soundpost removed and the difference in sound was night and day!
Mira Steenbrugge: Always a lovely experience with Paul, very attentive and thorough and accommodating. Been coming here for years!
Rich Van: Paul was super nice and knowledgeable in things related to the violin. He was also very patient in finding a comfortable chin rest for me.
XY Xia: I asked if the owner could mail the violin to me after I picked online, and then Paul drove all the way from Boston with his six violins just so I can play them myself and pick one by hearing it. That’s the most professional attitude I’ve ever experience, 5 stars is an understatement, I should give you 10 stars. Vielen Dank!
Leslie Azaret: An extremely knowledgable luthier, Paul was very helpful in my search for a cello. I highly recommend calling or stopping by his shop. You will be glad.
Adolfo Holguin: I brought my violin to Paul for an adjustment after having taken it to other places for minor sound adjustments. None of the various adjustments I had had before really managed to make my violin sound to its full potential. So I decided to bite the bullet and to have Paul take a look at it. After hearing my violin, he was able to pin point the exact issues I was having (and how to deal with them) and worked to tailor the sound. After he was done with the instrument, I ended up with a more responsive and resonant violin. Plus he is super friendly and really cares about the work he does. I will definitely be going back in the future whenever possible.
David Shin: Needed some strings for my cello a while back and was interested in changing up my choice of strings. Paul was very patient and helpful in explaining the differences between available string options and helped me to make the best choice for my needs.Would absolutely recommend his store!
Jeff Bezanson: Recently got a violin, and suspected the sound and playability could be improved. In about an hour, Paul did just that! As he put it, the instrument went from sounding like a nervous singer to one singing from the soul.I have also brought my violin to him for repairs and maintenance a couple times, and he does a great job for a fair price. I highly recommend him.
Jungsu: I bought a nice violin from here. Paul offered me great service. He kindly showed me his violins and gave me very useful tips for beginners with interesting stories about violins. I held a violin he recommended and decided to buy it. When I revisited this store for string change, Paul friendly changed the string with a detailed explanation. I am so lucky this store is my close neighbor.
Gail Coleman: I had neglected my cello for too many years and Paul Wiessmeyer effectively brought it back to life! I highly recommend his services!
Adam Bern: Not sure about some of the one-star reviews here, particularly because they don't talk about their experience. I visited Paul for the first time a few days ago. He was very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Really enjoyed talking to him. Definitely recommend going to visit him for your string instrument needs.
Russell Cohen: Needed some basic work done—rehair + seam closed on my cello. Paul was responsive, always on time, and got me sorted in a couple of days. Will definitely be my go-to for any future instrument repair needs. He also has some very cool 3D-printed mutes
Tim Xu: Went to look at cellos and pretty taken aback that the owner didn’t want to spend 5 mins showing me instruments (after I called ahead) because he assumed I wasn’t a serious buyer. Not a great feeling to be left with.

New England Violins Inc: what do users think?
Alex P: Came in to get my bow grip replaced and get an estimate for replacing my violin bridge. Paul took his time looking over both bow and violin, asked if I had time to stay, and I said yes. He told me my bridge seemed misplaced; he pulled out his tape measure and compass to measure quite a few different parts of my instrument. My bridge was too wide, my soundpost and bass bar weren't aligned properly, my tailpiece was too long, and my fingerboard was scooped on the E string side. He asked, "Is it hard to push down on the E string?" I responded, "How did you know!" He told me he could fix these issues if I wanted and the instrument would probably sound richer. If he fixed them and I didn't like the sound, he could move it back exactly how it was. Paul asked me about every detail before making changes. Whole thing, including bow repairs and rehair, new tailpiece and fine tuner, new and aligned bridge and soundpost, restained fingerboard and planing, was ~$550, paid upon pickup a week later. When I arrived for pickup, he explained to me some historical facts about different fingerboard lengths, and I asked if he was familiar with my violin maker. He said not more than basic facts, pulled out a book with all luthiers through time, and sure enough there was my violin maker! My violin sounds significantly richer and actually rings now, which I didn't think possible. It is certainly worth more than its original price plus repairs cost. He asked me to play before I left to make sure I liked it, told me to come back anytime if I wanted to revert. The tailpiece Paul chose matches my pegs better than my old one, not to mention it's the proper size. I came in for a bow grip and left with a completely new higher class violin!
Daniel Fuentes: I`m not usted to do this but I think this can be helpful to others. Around a month ago, I was visiting Boston with my wife. We are both profesional cellists. I needed to change the endpin from my cello and I searched on Google the nearest luthier from where I was staying. Since it was a simple job to be done as he said by the phone, I went to New England Violins. This Paul started to work on my cello and we were very surprised in how he did his work because he treated my cello very careless. The tailpiece and strings were hanging from the cello as he moved, they kept banging everything the touch. I asked him to please stop, but he didnt hear me since he was on the phone the entire time he was working on the cello. At this point I had to grab the cello from his hands and paid for his awful job and we left. I dont like my instrument to be banged around. I do not recomend this place at all. Be careful. Later I checked there were a los of places much better than this one and they knew this awful luthier.I Added a photo of the transaction so the awful luthier does not try to lie about this.
George Monaco: My daughter needed a shoulder rest for her viola. The owner, Paul, was very courteous and knowledgeable. He helped my daughter pick the best shoulder rest for her.
Kelly Frazier: Paul is knowledgeable and engaging, he helped me find just the right 7/8 cello to fit my small hands! He set me up with a very fine instrument at a fair price and made sure I was happy with the set up before I left. His shop outshines others in the area.
Leslie Azaret: Great experience at Paul's shop. An amazing selection of cellos and Paul is a wealth of knowledge in the instruments and their repair. Check it out!
Janice Tucker Rhoda: What a beautiful shop! When I lived and taught Violin in the Boston area for many years, I referred adult and younger students to Paul, the owner. They loved going there on a consistent basis. Whether they needed to improve their own Violin with new strings or adjustments, or purchase a new Violin or Bow, Paul was always very patient! My highest recommendation!
Virginia Hutton: I went to New England Violins to inquire about selling a violin. The owner could not have been nicer, more quick to respond, and above all, totally honest. He gave me a great price and I learned a lot about violins from our chat. I could not recommend more.
Lori Tsuruda: Paul gave expert and persona lo sized advice and instrument care after he carefully listened to me.
Caio de Paula: Always good to spend time with Paul!
Laura Treppel: This was my 1st visit to New England Violins, and I was thrilled! I used to be an accomplished violinist but stopped at least 30 years ago. Having recently retired, I moved from NJ and wanted to try playing again. I have a valuable instrument and needed a reputable person to repair it.I was nervous and concerned about whether I would be over charged or pressured into unnecessary repairs. Also, I was worried that I would feel embarrassed and intimidated since I played so poorly.Paul was affable and down to earth, so I immediately felt comfortable . He Is passionate about his work and approaches it analytically. He diagnosed the issues and formulated a plan that included step wise options, which allowed me to decide if I wanted everything repaired at once, or just do the basics first. I never felt pressured to do more than it needed, and prices were very fair. When the work was finished, I couldn’t believe how amazing it sounded. He truly is gifted in terms of adjusting the soundpost , and fixed my fingerboard and bridge so that the sound was full and clear but required way less effort to produce it.I later told Paul about my chronic neck/shoulder issues. He let me try out several chinrests and shoulderpads, which made a huge difference. The price again was very reasonable, and he never pushed me to purchase them.Altogether I spent several hours in his shop, and did not feel rushed. I enjoyed talking to him and learned from his experiences. It also helps that he is a professional violist so can check out the sound by playing it himself. I highly recommend this lovely place if you need help getting your instrument to sound it’s best.Laura Treppel
Marie Comuzzo: This man makes me happy! He transformed the sound of my violin with an amazing reglage and always gives wonderful suggestions and inputs to improve comfort, sound and life in general!
Victoriola “Bob” the Fifth: I originally came in just to buy a viola mute. Instead, I was treated to a 45 minute adventure in improving my technique, and got to see and try a large exhibit of violas of wildly different shapes and sizes, led by Paul himself. I've been playing for about 4 years, and he fixed my posture and shifting in approximately 15 minutes. I left the store with the mute, a shoulder rest, and a wealth of new knowledge on everything relating to violas. Paul is an amazing and friendly person, and this store is hands-down the best store on string instruments that I've had the pleasure of experiencing.
李半江: best
Paperworks Etc: Excellent, excellent service. I enjoyed my experience there. I am a newbie at violin, but my shopping experience there boost my confidence. Very amicable, patient, and knowledgeable.
Nicole Rim: Paul is very knowledgeable and helpful!
Matthew Abraham: The only place I'll ever go to get another violin. After a long search, Paul gave me violin choices that made me question going to another store ever again.
Ayako Mikami: I highly recommend Paul whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or an advanced musician. I say this from the eight years I’ve known Paul - he has a warm and joyful personality and cares about his customers. He will patiently help you select the instrument that suits your skill level and your needs. Due to harsh New England winters and accidents I had to go to Paul multiple times to get my instrument fixed (cracks, chips, issue with the soundpost, etc.) - the fact that my cello looks beautiful and is still in great condition as when I first bought it from Paul speaks to his deep understanding of string instruments and skilled handwork. In addition, I’ve taken lessons from him and he gave me great advices in which I improved my bowing, musicality, tonality, and bring out the best possible sounds from my cello. If you are looking for someone who you can trust your instrument with or looking to buy one that you will fall in love with, New England Violins is the place to go.
Sandy G: My son and I bought a young professional violin made by Ray Melanson from NE Violins, after a long nationwide search for the right sound. Owner Paul Dulude let us try out his collection and take our time. We were very pleased with the service, transaction, and now the playing.
Christopher Goodwin: In search of a new viola my junior year of High School, with a quality sound and price for college auditions, I went to numerous shops around the Albany area. After months of searching for an instrument suiting my tastes, at an affordable price I stumbled upon Dulude's shop. Though it was a far drive to Massachusetts, his selection of instruments far surpassed any shop that I'd been to before. Such a vast selection of rich sounding instruments, many at great prices. After spending a day at the store I came home with a viola that was just right for me, and my wallet! I felt so welcomed and comfortable trying various instruments for hours. I would not think twice before deciding where to go in search of any instrument needs in the future. New England Violins has everything a string player could need or want. I look forward to visiting again and I have and would highly recommend this shop to anyone in search of a fine string instrument!
Louise Myers: For a few years I had been thinking of trying to locate a better instrument than my current violin. I went to Paul's shop once, tried several instruments, but found none that were of the tone quality I was searching for--and still in my price range. I returned about a year later, and he introduced me to the instrument maker, Pio Montanari of Genova, Italy--and I played on a violin and a viola made by him--in the twenty-first century. Even without the period of playing-in and aging, so important to an instrument's voice, I could tell these were both excellent instruments, the viola especially so. There was an evenness in the quality of sound produced across all four strings. In particular, I was impressed by the clarity of the sound of the notes produced--as though the harmonics within each note were balanced and speaking clearly. I bought them both--at extremely fair prices.I have not been back to have the instruments adjusted, though it may be time now, but I have it on good authority from an excellent violist that Paul is a master at setting up and adjusting instruments--a fine, delicate, and not too often talked about art.If you are in the market for a good instrument, definitely take yourself over to New England Violins on Mass Ave. The shop is beautifully laid out--the perfect place to try out several instruments. Paul offers instruments at many different price levels, but he has a fine ear and a respect for stringed instruments and string players alike, and he doesn't carry something that falls below the mark of being a sound instrument. You'll enjoy your experience of shopping here.

The 3D Print Zone: My friend and I went into this shop and were disrespected by the guy who works there (not sure if he's the owner). Highly negative attitude, not sure what that guy's deal is. I would recommend finding another guitar shop where they treat their customers with respect.
Kevin Stillerman: FIND ANOTHER GUITAR SHOP! Wish I could leave a 0 star rating. The owner of the store was extremely rude and disparaging. His tone is very condescending when I asked him about how to wire my guitar. In addition the overall pricing at the store is very high including hourly rates. I encourage you to bring your business elsewhere, there are plenty of other guitar shops in the area.
