Fresh Pond Golf Course: what do users think?
James Rippy: Was it wonderful day, the weather was fine nature was beautiful...
Nicky R: Beautiful I wish to see more road races there.
Tim C: Best overall course in the area, for the views and value. Fantastic greens, and really well taken care of. Staff are more than fine- have never had a single issue; I know they can get worried about pace of play, but I don't blame them for trying to keep it moving. Just a really excellent place.
Mªeugenia Gonzalez Rivero: Reserva natural cerca de Boston.
rafinel castillo de leon: Beautiful
Eduards Tralmaks: The course is actually good with good greens BUT man the staff that works there is something else. I’m not talking about the guy at the pro shop but the starter and the old guy driving around looking to scream at someone for something. We parked with 2 wheels on the rough instead of all of the wheels being on the cartpath on accident and the old guy drives and screams while my friend is chipping. The starter is always mad about something and rushing everybody to hit their balls and get out of the way. I shanked my ball because of being rushed and he told me to let the group behind me go and I felt embarrassed. Also my score is 90 so I’m not a complete amateur. I would love to come back but while the same staff is there count me out.
Chris Lynch: Beware around hole 4 and 7! I got stung 4 times by some angry wasps, told the guy at the clubhouse and he said “he told groundskeepers to spray that a few days ago but I guess they haven’t gotten around to it.” Pretty bad look knowing you have a wasps nest in the middle of the course and not taking care of it immediately. Disappointing because it’s a nice course
Kate Haber: I was excited to enjoy a day of golf at Fresh Pond, a course I’ve played at before, but the day started off terribly. A female employee was positioned at the first hole and began verbally attacking my golf partner and me for being a few mins late to our tee time (despite the second half of our group having already teed off). While I can understand an employee asking for us to hurry the employee continued to state that we were late and continued to yell while I was trying to hit from the tee. She was yelling that I should just drop the ball up the fairway despite the fact that I had plenty of time to tee off. I repeatedly stated that I was sorry for being a few minutes late, but that she was being rude and that her yelling wasn’t helping us move any faster. Instead, it was just making all the members in my group uncomfortable. It was clear to me that this employee could not control herself as she compulsively stated how we were late despite our apologizing. It got so bad that I finally said she was ruining our experience and told her to stop berating me and my golf partner. She finally stopped. There is absolutely no excuse for speaking to patrons the way my group was spoken to today, especially not for being a few minutes late. Luckily the group I golfed with made up for the terrible beginning. Regardless, I won’t be golfing here again.
Johanna Meyer: Always a good walk
Henry Buda: Great course but I felt the greens were a little faster than some other courses in the area.
lafontaine orvild: Beautiful place to walk around.
Daniel Destefano: Very enjoyable course and staff
Anna Dyakiv: Worst experience I’ve ever had at a golf course. Spoke with Andrew over the phone to book a tee time. Only asked for the name. Did not provide any instructions . Upon arriving at the first tee I was told I need two bags of clubs to play even though I had all the clubs and was just sharing a bag with a friend. The person checking in at the tee, Sunny was extremely disrespectful, raised her voice and got into my face. When I walked back to ask Andrew why that was the policy he said “I am not going to get into it” wouldn’t explain why. Raised his tone, refused to refund to the credit card I paid with and instead threw the cash in my face and told me to leave. Gave me a phone number for his director when I tried to call it, Andrew answered. There was a group checking in at the same time who were appalled by how he was speaking to my friend and I. Needless to say it was a very unpleasant experience. If I was properly explained the policy and treated with respect I would have had no issue renting another bag! Additionally just read the review and it seems like this is an ongoing issue and the staff is untrained and disrespectful.
Charlie Cronin: Probably my worst golf experience yet and without a doubt the worst golf staff I have encountered. All but one employees were extremely rude, condescending and the opposite of empathetic towards the unexperienced golfers we were with. Right off the bat, the ranger on the first tee was pressuring us about pace and proceed to follow us down the fairway and tell the girls to hit off the handicap tee. The pressure exerted by the staff on the first hole made for a terrible start to the day and made us feel like we couldn't take any time on the remaining holes. We didn't even putt on the first hole we felt that pressured. This is a 9-hole municipal public course, yet the staff that works here acts as if they're hosting the US Open. On top of that, it's an enormous rip off. To play only 9-holes and be treated by the staff like that, paying upwards of $40 is simply comical. You could play 18 holes at most courses for that price. It's safe to say I will not be returning to this course and would strongly not recommend it for anyone who wants to have fun golfing or isn't extremely experienced.
Max P: Well maintained 9 hole course but it can get a little busy especially in the summer afternoons, especially with tee times 10 minutes apart from each other.
Simon Watts: I have lived close to this course for the last fifteen years since moving here from England.I have been lucky enough to play some of the best golf courses in England and here in the US.Fresh Pond Golf Course is absolutely the best value round of golf in the Greater Boston area. It would still be good value at twice the price.Bob and Andy in the pro shop run a very tight ship - the course and greens are always in excellent shape. They are professionals, they care about the game and care about their course. Play there - get to know them - it will quickly become your favorite place for nine holes. The course is on the shorter side, designed to challenge the skilled golfer but accessible to the high handicapper. I aways find the dog-leg left fourth hole a worthy challenge. A well hit tee shot is rewarded by a down hill fairway at the landing zone.I always forget that I’m in the middle of a city - just this week a beautiful doe stood transfixed on the cart path as we hit our putts on the 6th.
Emilio Lapiello: Nice course, but management lacks empathy for people they happen to spray with putrid water while playing. When asked why the sprinklers were on while people were playing, their reply was that "there is a timer for the sprinklers and that's how it is".It is unfortunate for paying customers that the timer is set to start while they are still playing. It would have been nice of them to just apologize for the inconvenience and set things straight, but that did not happen at all. With all the worries about Covid and other diseases, recommendations to wear masks indoors and so on, I am eager to find out how the City of Cambridge Health department feels about people being sprayed with putrid water on one of the facilities the city owns and manages.
Al Wayne: Andrew at the front desk is horrible. Bad tempered, extremely rude, and inconsiderate. Seems as if he’d rather be doing anything else - a true pity on a course as good as this one. Seriously negatively impacts the course experience.
Patrick McKenna: Just golfed here for the first time last Friday, and now see why the tee times fill up! The staff was friendly and welcoming as soon as we walked up to the club house, even showing us the practice green and made sure we knew where the first tee was. The course makes you forget you're as close to the city as you are! Great views and challenging shots, this was a great course for me and my fiancé to enjoy together to help our game. Really looking forward to making this one of our regular courses!!!
Tyler Jon Morrison: This perfect, 9-hole layout is so much fun and so well maintained; you will always get to use all the clubs in your bag here, with two par-5 holes and three par-3s, playing to a par of 35. The greens are invariably in excellent condition and tend to run on the faster side of the Stimpmeter compared against most public courses. Donald Ross elements of architecture are detectable in a number of the greens complexes and tee shots, however the course is very easy to walk without too many elevation changes overall. Bob Carey does a great job of running the pro shop for all your couse equipment needs, and all of the staff are excellent at their jobs, friendly and knowledgeable. Call the pro shop for day-of tee times, but otherwise their online booking is easy to use. Come out to Fresh Pond and hopefully I'll see you out there 🍻 cheers.
FELIPE DE AZEVEDO SILVA RIBEIRO: Lugar excelente para entrar em contato com a natureza, caminhar ou fazer piquenique.

George Wright: what do users think?
DeAnne Lombardi: If I could give 0 stars, I would. With a single golf ball, some professional golfer completely shattered my rear windshield while my car was in my driveway because this golf course is on the other side of my backyard. Thank you, and golf somewhere else.
Sam DeFranceschi: tough track... tons of blind spots... take iron when in doubtUPDATE: played last week.. the course is in the best condition I have ever seen. Greens running really well... Don Ross would be proud... they are doing a really excellent job... this is one of the nicest public courses in the entire north east, no doubt... very nice people workin there too.. highly recommend VERY tough though... hit the fairway no matter what!
Danny C. (Reviewer Super Star): Awesome course. Excellent greens. Super nice people. Give it a try.
John Lally: Great course if you enjoy 6+ hour rounds. Worst pace of play I’ve ever encountered.
Chris Frank: Hidden gem for sure tucked away in a neighborhood. Prices are fair and place was in great shape for mid October. Definitely will play here again.
Bruce Barnett: Gorgeous golf course. Super staff. Very comfortable pub with great beer on draft and nice menu.
Gregory Edwards: Amazing course. Greens were excellent. Ross use of terrain is incredible.
Martin McCrory: George Wright is spectacular course at an unbelievable value. The course was in great condition (October 2022). There were a few patchy areas on the fairways, and one green (#13) appeared to have a fungus issue, but everything was perfectly playable and enjoyable. The greens are generally fast, firm, consistent, and clever in design. The tee boxes are large, flat, and well maintained. The layout is difficult but not unfair, and quite smart—one of Donald Ross’s best. Good players are challenged to hit tough shots, while average players have plenty of room to get the ball in play. The course is quite walkable despite being very hilly. All in all, it’s hard to believe that this is a municipal course that can be played for under $60 on weekends. It deserves its place as one of the best, if not the best, municipal course in New England. The only minor drawbacks are the lack of a driving range (not unusual at all for this area) and the difficulty of getting a tee time.I would happily play here again any day, any time.
Chris Latimer: Great, fun, and challenging Ross layout, second only to the outstanding staff who went above and beyond. Called us later that day after finding a wedge on 17 to see if anyone was missing. It was mine. Great texcuse to play next week.
Will Wright: Absolutely loved this course. I dropped in to practice putting but the staff was so nice, they set me up to play 9 holes even though it was a busy Sunday morning. The course was in fabulous shape, it's a real gem as far as layout and challenging play. Beautiful landscaping and park setting so no houses around at all (except for along #1 and those aren't in play at all). You don't find a Muni with in tact 1938 Ballroom, Locker room & clubhouse that looks like a mansion every day!
Thom “Thom” B: Nice layout, greens good, fairways ok, tee boxes good. VERY HILLY, which makes it extra challenging. White tees require good, straight long shots. Second shot shouldn't be cheap. Will play again. Wish the cart direction sign was closer to green
James McConville: Excellent value for golf course of this quality
Isaac!: Wow. Just wow. Hats off to Donald Ross and the city of boston. Was undecided about playing here due to the cheap green fees and the fact that it is a municipal course, but trust me, it is worth every cent and more. Every hole is unique in its own way, and if you don't hit the shots, you will be punished. The undulations were incredible. The only negative was the greens were a bit bumpy due to aeration. If you are traveling through boston, you have to stop here!
Patrick Anderson: I played here in June when I was in town for the U.S. Open. The fact you have a municipal course designed by the Donald Ross is amazing, and it lived up to the hype. The prices are reasonable for out of towners. It was in the 70 range per-person for my dad and I, and that included cart. For the conditions of the course, it was well worth it. I've paid more for worse conditions. Also it's cheaper for locals. Finally I loved the course itself. It's challenging since it has elevation changes, blind shots, and Donald Ross greens where they are elevated and can roll off if you are testing the edges. That said, it felt fair. I never felt like the difficulty was a gimmick like a tree in the middle of the fairway, or greens that have 45 degree slopes in the middle for giggles, and so forth. For me, this is fair and challenging golf. Not gimmicky or trying to be too long for the average amateur with 190 par-3s from the whites like some stupid courses do.Overall a great course steep in history. It was a WPA project during the depression, and Boston has a true gem here.
Jim Flaherty: Pretty good shape greens we’re recently aerated so rough.
Tony Arguello: Great golf course hidden gem in Boston
Max P: We started 9 holes on the back 9 which we later found meant we teed off with the most difficult holes on the course. Either way, it was a good time- course was well maintained, staff was friendly and plenty of libations on offer at the club house. Plenty of carts to go around too.
Shawn: Super friendly staff and fairways were in good condition as well.
RY: Pros:- always well maintained- variety of interesting holes- great test of your game- greens running smoothCons:- some blind tee shots can get you if you are not familiar with the course (download a gps yardage app)- can be difficult to get a tee time
Rich Archibald: Great course.
Steve G: Nice conditions but every hole is a blind shot. One of the worst designs I’ve ever played. I don’t mind a few blind shots but this place is ridiculous. Don’t waste your money unless you like being frustrated.

Newton Commonwealth Golf Course: what do users think?
Max P: Came in late April 2023- four of the holes were undoing maintenance and some of the greens were just completely destroyed. Ground staff was also pretty ambivalent. There are also some questionably designed holes- #13 and #14 in particular put you in range of the parked cars and clubhouse. The course is also set on a bunch of hills, so a nice flat fairway is actually hard to come by.
Shawn Connors: Great place to catch a Boston sunset while swinging some sticks at a little white ball.
James E.: Great public course, in the mornings the starters run it like clockwork. I normally finish 18 holes in 3:15, faster if I get out solo or as a twosome. The pace of play has been exceptional. One of the few muni courses that attend to leaves on the fairway / greens. A fun layout and great for walkers. This is my preferred 18-hole public course close to the city.
Lawrence Majchrzak: Will say the course is not in bad shape, but pace of play is horrendous. Absolutely a joke it took us 4.5 hours to get through 14 holes. On pace for nearly a 6 hour round. Had to leave because I didnt want to be late for work. Dont come here unless you have all day.Ranger sitting there doing nothing chatting on the phone by the clubhouse.
Cameron Shelmire: It took 3 hours to play 9 holes and the course was overbooked. The course was in regular condition, but I do not recommend playing 18 past 12 pm.
Daniel Mitchell: Course was in tremendous shape, fun mix of hole difficulty to keep you engaged but not ruin your confidence. The gentleman working the pro shop was friendly and helpful. I showed up looking for 9 holes and left after 27. If I’m in the area in the future I’ll be back
Jamie Scott: Gets very busy around 4:00 pm. Very narrow entrance. Have to do a lot of maneuvering to get a parking spot.
Chris Truglio: One of the more unique muni courses out there. Entire course is generally maintained pretty well, yet challenging regardless of handicap. Good number of fairways are on huge slopes, so even if you hit it straight, your ball might roll all the way down -- EVERYTHING always rolls towards the clubhouse. Keep that in mind, adjust accordingly & have fun!
Jeremy Anderson: Great mid summer conditions. Even in a drought
Jon Koehly: Nice place.
chris bird: Maybe because I didn't play well, but the course is either a side hill or up/down hill or dog leg. All is in good shape and staff was really nice. Parking is a beast and the practice green is useless since it's synthetic on cement. I like George wright so much better.
Peter Loar: This is a very average municipal course. It’s decently maintained and staff is friendly. Pace of play on the weekend is generally pretty poor. The tee times are a little to closer together in my opinion. Half the time when I go I stop after 13 or 14 the hole with the tee box next to the club house just due to slow pace of play.Overall it’s a decent course to practice on if you are a beginner or just trying to work on certain aspects of your game.
Sean Smith: Very average course, the quality is fine.
Jake Cabrera: Well kept course. Friendly staff. Great atmosphere to enjoy a round. Solid pro shop and food options.
Chris Cannizzaro: I’ve played there a bunch of times and it’s actually a nice little course. A bit short and quirky (see 13th and 14th holes) but overall a fun course and they keep it in excellent shape for a municipal. The only real problem is the pace of play. They schedule a tee time every 10 minutes and then don’t have a ranger or ANYONE out there to enforce pace. On weekday afternoons it can get pretty ridiculous and on weekends, just forget it. Tried to play last Saturday and it took us 45 minutes to play the first 2 holes waiting on every single shot and then there were 2 groups ahead of us waiting on the 3rd tee box. Eventually we just jumped ahead to 7 and played a few random holes because or else I might still be out there. Hopefully the absence of a ranger is a staffing issue or something that they can address for next season and if not hopefully they consider spacing out the tee times a bit so it doesn’t create such a log jam.
Qi Li: Great condition on the fairways but horrible green due to ongoing work but lots of sand which make it completely awful to put. Nice view early am though.
Elizabeth Wilson: Very interesting layout; fun!
Mike Jones: Ranger on Sunday was extremely rude. Came over and started, literally yelling at me, “you need to pick it up!!!!”, I said ok, he said again “you need to pick it up!!! the team in front of you is already a hole ahead!!!!!”. I decided to skip the green play on the hole to keep pace and jumped up to the next tee, and the team in front of us was still on the fairway. Through my whole day off. Extremely disrespectful. Finished 18 in under 4 hours. Apparently that’s too slow for this course. Mind you, this is a PUBLIC course and I am paying to enjoy my Sunday morning. Not going back.
Cara smith: I did a search for kid friendly golf course. This course came up. Called and they said no. I think it's only friendly if the kids are golfing. Not if they are sitting in your lap. Just a note to add.
Adi MR: Enjoy playing this course… started playing it this year to play a quick 9 on weekend mornings. It not too long, hilly, on the narrower side, and very enjoyable for an intermediate golfer. Easy to book online, friendly staff and the course is in good shape this year.
Michael Mastroberti: If you’ve played golf before..this definitely is not for you.
