Friendly and knowledgeable staff, and a pretty good selection considering the size of the store and the location in downtown Cambridge.They have just about everything you could need for an outdoor adventure: tents, backpacks, clothing, footwear, cookware, knives, and other outdoor gear you'd need at the campsite or on the trail. It was a lot bigger back in Boston, but I’m so happy they decided to open their doors in Cambridge! I’ve bought countless jackets, tents, camping gear, backpacks, gloves and accessories for myself and my family. I’ve always found what I needed when gearing up for treks in the white mountains or vacationing in other countries. It’s truly your old mom and pop store with lots of knowledgeable sales associates. I love Tent City for its brands, products, value, selection and prefer it over REI, EMS, Bob Store..ect.

Backpacks of all sizes for hiking or day-to-day, hiking boots, sandals & shoes, sleeping bags & sleeping pads, clothes, outerwear, tents, hammocks, water bottles, camelbacks & water bladders, binoculars, knives, stoves, and all the assorted technical gear you can think of. If you need anything for hiking, backpacking, camping, fishing, etc this is the place to go! Support a small, local independently-owned business instead of Amazon or a large chain store.

Nathan Elchert: I placed an order for sale-priced cold-weather gear on their website, which qualified for free two-day shipping. A week later the package had not arrived. I emailed and received no response. I called and was told that my order had been automatically cancelled due to “a red flag.” (I had received no notification of the cancellation whatever.) I said I still wished to order the items and asked how to go about this. I was told to reorder the items in two orders rather than one, to reduce the total costs and avoid another red flag. I set about doing this but found that the sale pricing was no longer available on three of four items. I called to ask about the pricing and was told that the pricing I had received the first time was wrong due to a pricing glitch on their end, that they would not sell me the items at that price, and that they wouldn’t ship to me anyway, since packages are often stolen in my area. (I guess my area is NYC — they won’t ship to NYC?) This was a frustrating waste of time and I still don’t have the cold-weather gear I need for an upcoming trip.

Calvin Harjono: I don’t think I’ve ever written a Google review but felt a need to do so in this given the absolutely terrible experience at had in this shop. I should first mention that I’m a huge advocate for local businesses but in no way is it acceptable for customers to be yelled at and run out of your store for wanting to try on a jacket. That’s not a business, that’s a sham.I came in to browse around, as I had passed by many times and been attracted to the variety of backpacks. While there I saw they had a jacket I was interested in and I had asked if I could try it on (it apparently was not in the showroom). The gentlemen at the register, who I can only presume as the owner considering that his customer service was absolute in no way someone you would want to hire to run your shop, immediately gave me a keen look of suspicion. To which I tried to dispelled with “it’s okay if you don’t, I just want to try it on to see if it’s right for me.”He abruptly says “SO YOU WANT TO TRY IT ON AND BUY IT SOMEWHERE ELSE?!?” I was stunned. In this awkward position, I gave him the benefit of the doubt and said “it’s okay, don’t want to trouble you, don’t worry about.” I had thought he was joking, but he wasn’t. Moreover, he had the audacity to say “Yeah, I won’t worry about it.” I couldn’t help but feel so uncomfortable I hastily walked out.People looking to shop here, I can only advise that you take my experience for whatever it’s worth. I moved 3 blocks away from this store and had all the intentions of supporting a local business. I am mortified with the experience, perhaps he was having a bad day? I can only guess, but I hope for future customers he surely has less of them.

Michael Meyer: Not much selection and very limited inventory in site. Check their website before visiting site. Think small business not large business like REI or LL Bean. Sales people seem depressed and exhausted.

Kira Clingen: This place needs more staff and better training, especially in their bike department. Came in with a flat tire - they replaced it, it went flat the next day. Went back, they replaced it again, it went flat. Took it to another bike shop - there was a massive shard of glass in the rim that they didn’t find either time. Out $30 and multiple hours.

Elisabeth Graham: The staff at REI Cambridge is so helpful and kind. I ordered the wrong shoes and they assisted with an easy exchange, communicating what they had in stock and what they didn’t. I’m so grateful to have this neighborhood store close by.

Emily Heckel: This is a (beautifully designed) T-shirt and water bottle store. I wouldn't really call it an REI. Came in looking for liner gloves and trekking pole baskets and they don't stock either. In fact, they barely stock any gear at all, and this is on purpose. They do have a few cycling items I think, and a comically tiny climbing section that I have to assume is only there for aesthetic purposes. The target demographic seems to exclusively be cyclists and people who wear overpriced Patagonia to brunch. The staff were super nice and they were knowledgeable about the items I was looking for (just didn't have them). They seemed quite used to responding to customers' confusion about the store. I think they should rename the store, or make it more clear online that this isn't a true REI as most of us know it. Overall, it felt a bit like being in a gallery - they display (limited) gear in an attractive way, but they intentionally don't stock it. Seems very focused on the aesthetic over the practical, which clashes with the brand concept. I can't think of a reason why someone would go to this store on purpose. I ended up driving to Reading and finding everything I needed, and I guess I'll be doing that moving forward. It's unfortunate, I live in Cambridge and I would shop here all the time if it was a real store and not a display window.

So did I 😞Very first time I’ve been treated so bad at REI store, this is the first and last time I come to this one!Meanwhile Framingham, which is my actual main store is AWESOME,It’s totally the opposite, doesn’t even look like it’s the same chain ☹️

Diot Sébastien: The store was good and the staff was helpful.However this store does not stock most of REI's merchandise and it's painfull to search on the website if they have my size for each shoes.I wanted to buy a very common pair of climbing shoes but I have to try differents size, they don't have any stock in 150 miles around ... My only way to go through is to order each shoes that I want to try : 199$ each ! (which is already very expansive).Big no for me.

Went there to exchange an Arcteryx Shell which I bought last year but it was one size bigger than I wanted and have been thinking of getting one size smaller.Procrastinating for months, yeah I know, I finally made the trip only to find out it was just 3 days that 1 year passed. Damn I was sad however the manager honored it. They are excellent. Walked me through the steps and did whatever neededand they helped me put in an order.The site is new and parking is tough however the area is undergoing construction. Hoping to seethe area complete with all the construction done. Newer location nearer to my place and well they have a lifelong customer thanks to their excellent service.

He provided the very useful info based on our questions and recommended some good models with good value, instead of most fancy or expensive ones. And my husband was even allowed to try them out by a quick outdoor run. In conclusion, we are very happy with our purchase experience there and definitely will recommend it to anyone else.

Mary Sedlak: I walked in to ask about whether or not trail running shoes were required for a trail marathon marketed as friendly for beginners while on a walk, and I was so pleased to find that 1) the staff member was incredibly knowledgeable and 2) he answered that no, they probably weren’t necessary, but explained what their options were and the pros/cons of each without pressuring me to buy anything.

Robert Griffith: Was in need of my first good pair of running shoes, and the staff was highly knowledgeable and very kind and helpful! The gentleman working watched my stride/gait and brought out different options that fit my run style. They allowed me to run up and down the block in the shoes I was trying on, trying out different combos of the shoes on my left and right foot. Incredibly helpful and friendly staff, and I would recommend you go here for any of your running needs.

mike olsen: Went in needed a pair of shorts as I under packed for a weekend getaway. Unfortunately they didn't have anything in my size. I don't hold that against them as many running stores don't seem to stock much for larger guys.They did however have a large selection of shoes, clothing and accessories in a decent sized store. Plus there branded stuff looks amazing, I seriously wanted to buy all of their branded gear.Highly recommend unless you are a huskier lad just looking for run clothing.
