L Ogden: Beautiful space, great vibes, lovely people. Plus, I’m always getting compliments on my cuts and the color I get from Trephin, so that’s nice. I tried a half dozen hair salons when I moved to the Boston area and this is the spot. Love it.

I had the pleasure of meeting AJ, who is as talented as he was knowledgeable about healing therapies relating to the human body. I experienced a truly moving sound bowl / healing session that was felt deep in my heart and head. I left feeling relaxed, at ease, and centered.The space at Trephin is city chic with just the perfect amount of weird mixed in for good measure. The staff are delightfully kind, upbeat, and accommodating. The overall vibe is one where you can feel "great" being just yourself without being judged. It was marvelous! 10/10 would go back again!!

I was actually recommended the place by a friend and I thank them so often for the rec. Listen, if you want a spectacular hair cut I am sure every stylist here will do an amazing job but I feel particularly blessed to get my hair done by Joe. He listens and always works with me to create a cut that is best for my hair type (thick/wavy). He expertly works with my cowlick and widow’s peak as well.The same goes for the stylist that does the color for my hair. Ali is so talented and really sits with me to figure out what color would work best. She is always down to try what I bring to her but also gives great advice and really makes sure I know how to get the most longevity out of my color. Whether it is a fun color like peachy pink or a more natural color, Ali always does a beautiful job and hits it out of the park! I had never dyed my hair before and Ali was calming and made me feel confident.I don’t think I ever ever received more compliments on my hair. Not to mention everyone who works the front desk is so welcoming and helpful. The assistant stylists are also so wonderful! I literally count the days till I get to come in again and always leave with an extra pep in my step. For being right in downtown Trephin is also very affordable in my opinion. Zee: Not a good experience.First, no initial consultation. I’d provided inspo pictures and hair history over email so I assumed my stylist understood what I wanted and was confident about achieving it.She took the highlights from halfway down my head. The first round came out brassy and damaged looking which was nothing like the photo I provided. I asked her to fix it. Next round was redder but still extremely coppery and very cheap and trashy looking. Not blended or dimensional at all. I said I did not really like it and wished it was more blended. Stylist insisted it was blended and then said it was not possible to get the result in the photo because my base color was too dark. Wish she would have told me that during a consult instead of after my hair was already bleached. Stylist also took another client and worked on their hair in the middle of my processing and left the work including blow dry to an assistant that, while very sweet, had no idea what she was doing. Overall it’s a very nice salon but the stylist did not listen to me and consult to make sure I got my desired result. Now my previously virgin hair looks like I brassy and damages like someone poured peroxide all over it.I want to get it fixed but will be going elsewhere. I should have done more research before picking my salon.

Honestly not sure if he understood what I was saying even hearing it properly. After a minute of failed attempts at talking he eventually just went "shorter?" and I said yeah. Asked me a couple times whether it looked good, but always when the hair was wet and flat so I had no idea. After getting home to properly inspect it, 'tolerable' might be more accurate, if a bit generous. Going somewhere else now to have it fixed. $20 is a reasonable price for a haircut but I'd pay more than $20 now to go back in time and tell myself to go somewhere else.Service:Haircut

Anuradha: I was a first time client and came in to get my hair done with a pastel purple. I came in with hair that wasn’t bleached except for the ends. The stylist who I had the appointment with was very messy and didn’t seem to understand English. He had to bring the owner over to understand what I wanted. The owner explained to me they couldn’t do two toned hair and could only do one color. I said ok and specifically mentioned that I would only like the color on the lower portion of my hair and would like highlights. They didn’t listen to me and copied the photo and the stylist didn’t mention what he was doing. The stylist bleached my whole head (not just the lower portion as I had asked) with highlights without asking me if I was ok with bleaching. He then applied dye after without any heat and didn’t cover all spots. The haircut was also shabby with randomly cutting some portions of my hair. He styled my hair straight and then I was charged way over price than what I was told on the phone. The owner agreed to lower the price. Do not come here if you are assigned the Lebanese stylist. When I came home I found out he was so messy that the bleach had bleached portions of hair on my face. Overall very dissatisfied.

When I expressed the concern of my layer cut (it’s not even, and not much layer as that guy promised in the beginning when he said it is easy and ok, etc.) they just ignored my concern and just simply say they have to take care of other customer... so I have to move on??? I also don’t understand why they can be gossiping about customer, such a unsatisfied experience.

Allie Karta: I am new to the boston area, and i am sick of having to dye my hair every 2-3 weeks do to the sheer amount of grey I have. I called to book my appointment, and explain that i am ready to start blending my grey with my brown hair. I even explained on the phone what I wanted while looking at my reference photos and that I’ve had to dye my hair at home due to being new to Boston and not having hairstylist yet. I was assured this would not be an issue. Spoiler alert, it was an issue.My hair stylist Angela isn't even listed in the reviews or on the website, so either she is super new, or she does such bad job constantly that they remove all her reviews. I was also told that 1 person just quit and another is on vacation for the rest of the month so you can tell the remaining 2 stylists are stressed. My appointment was at 3, and I wasn’t seen until 3:30 because there are only 2 stylists working there and they are crazy short staffed. I showed Angela the reference pictures I described on the phone, and she’s like “I don’t do that type of color, but I can do something to blend ”. Then she kept on telling me I had a lot of banding, I agreed but since I clearly told them that I had to dye my hair at home a few times when I booked the appointment I figured she knew this ahead of time and had a plan.Well $315 before tip later (they didn’t even charge me for the full services since I think she realized how messed up this is) , I have the chunkiest highlights I have seen since the mid 2000’s . The sad part is that the whole time Angela was hyping me up and telling me it looked good, so maybe she thinks this is good work? I also had to leave the salon with my hair wet because they didn't have time to blow dry, but I think it was so I couldn’t see how bad the whole head looked. Michelle Faits: I had never dramatically colored my hair before, and I was new to Boston so I didn't have a regular stylist yet. It seemed risky to me to go to a new person and let them dye my dark brown hair red, but I figured a place named House of Colour would know what to do. Rogue was my stylist and she was fantastic. She looked through the pictures I showed her of what I was looking for and talked it through with me before she got started, and she took my ideas and added her expertise so I ended up with a look that I loved. She did such a nice job painting subtly different levels of color throughout my hair, so it came out looking very natural and pretty. I don't know how she did it, but the color even faded over time in a really pretty way, setting nicely closer to my natural brown with coppery highlights. Just went back to her for the roots and touch up. If you're considering changing up your color, I can't recommend Rogue and House of Colour enough.Service:Hair coloring

I could not be any happier with my new haircut and color.I have thick hair, which some stylists aren’t too thrilled to work with, but she seemed genuinely excited to work with it! He listens to what you're looking for, what you're currently unhappy about with your hair, and will work with you to get the look you want. They also stock DevaCurl products, which is nice. The staff is friendly and the place isn't too far of a walk from the Orange Line, but there are buses you can take from the Tufts Medical T stop to get you closer. I haven't been here for just a trim or anything like that, but if you're looking for stylists and people who know what they're doing with hair, go to Pure!

Natasha Girgis: Jenny is awesome as usual and the cut and color are great. I was also happy to see that Pure is taking Covid safety very seriously. The clients and stylists are distanced appropriately, everything is cleaned, and everyone wears a mask and uses hand sanitizer.
